Alaska Ocean Observing System

Alaska Ocean Observing System AOOS works with agencies and other organizations to provide coastal and ocean data and information.

As the โ€œeye on Alaskaโ€™s coasts and oceans,โ€ AOOS represents a network of critical ocean and coastal observations, data and information products that aid our understanding of the status of Alaskaโ€™s marine ecosystem and allow stakeholders to make better decisions about their use of the marine environment.

The UAF College of Fisheries & Ocean Sciences fos glider fleet is back in action for the 2026 spring season! ๐Ÿค–๐ŸŒŠ

Shackleton, Blinky, and Turbo are currently collecting ocean data in the Gulf of Alaska, tracking changing conditions, plankton blooms, and ecosystem productivity as spring unfolds.

This summer, the Whale Glider will also head north to the Chukchi Sea, where it will monitor ocean conditions and listen for marine mammals beneath the Arctic surface.

Opening this Friday, May 15, the Anchorage Museum will have an awesome new display about marine science and community observing in Alaska. It will be up for a year, so go check it out!

The exhibit was primarily funded and organized by NPRB and features several AOOS-supported projects, such as harmful algal bloom monitoring, Backyard Buoys, gliders, and moorings.

During the Northern Gulf of Alaska LTER cruise, UAF College of Fisheries & Ocean Sciences researchers deployed the GAK1 oceanographic mooring which included one of AOOS' acoustic receivers. For the next year, this receiver will be listening for tagged fish and crabs, providing crucial information on the distribution and movement of marine animals in the area.

What can 20+ years of ocean data tell us? For more than two decades, the U.S. Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS) and its regional partners have operated thousands of buoys, sensors, gliders, and radars across U.S. coasts and the Great Lakes.

Every observation adds to a long-term record of how our oceans. That record powers decisions every day:
โš“ ๐—ฃ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜๐˜€ & ๐˜€๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ฝ๐—ฝ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด move cargo safely using water levels, currents, and wave forecasts.
๐ŸŸ ๐—™๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜€ & ๐—ฎ๐—พ๐˜‚๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜‚๐—น๐˜๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฒ track ecosystem conditions and harmful algal blooms.
๐Ÿšจ ๐—˜๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ด๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐˜† ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—ด๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€ prepare for storms, flooding, and coastal hazards.
๐Ÿš ๐—ฆ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฐ๐—ต & ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐—ฐ๐˜‚๐—ฒ ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—บ๐˜€ model currents and winds to find people faster.
๐Ÿ™ ๐—–๐—ถ๐˜๐˜† ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ป๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€ use decades of coastal data to understand flooding risk and infrastructure planning.

Twenty years of sustained observations means:
โ–ช๏ธBetter forecasts
โ–ช๏ธSafer maritime operations
โ–ช๏ธStronger coastal economies
โ–ช๏ธMore resilient communities
