On June 20th , we celebrate the accomplishments and contributions of refugees here in Orange County and all over the world. We salute their courageous efforts in protecting their families and successfully resettling & building new lives after being forced to flee their countries due to war, civil unrest, or climate changes. Refugees are part of the fabric of America. Access California Services

A few days ago, I Facebooked this photo of a month-old baby sleeping on luggage outside Kabul airport. At that moment, they had been waiting 40 hours outside in dangerous conditions, but the dad had received death threats because of his work on a US-funded program and was desperate to get the family out. So I’m THRILLED to report that the family was evacuated safely and has reached Bahrain. I want this baby to know some day how many people around the world worked to get her out, including private citizens, the US military, vets, Senator Dick Durbinand Rep Carolyn B. Maloney. Many years ago my dad was a refugee whose life was saved by the good will of strangers, and I see an echo of myself in that little girl helped by so many just trying to do the right thing for a family in need. Bravo to all.

As the U.S. races to evacuated Americans and vulnerable allies stranded in Afghanistan, the Orange County Board of Supervisors has proposed a multilayered plan to relocate Afghan refugees.
