Superintendent Matsuda Reflects on Nearly 12 Years of Gratitude and Purpose
As I reflect on my nearly twelve years of service as Superintendent, I am filled with profound gratitude for your steadfast support and partnership. Together, we have celebrated monumental accomplishments—none of which would have been possible without your unwavering commitment to the students, families, staff, and community partners of AUHSD.
On a personal level, I often reflect on the story of my parents. I think of my mother, in particular, who was placed in an internment camp, segregated by the very country she loved. I know that if she could witness the work we are doing today—the
profound investment you have made in every child's potential—she would be proud. Proud not only of her son, but profoundly proud of our country and of this Board for supporting the
"Big Ideas" that move us closer to the ideals of true equity and opportunity for all.
My gratitude is matched only by my optimism for the future. Our continued commitment to school and District redesign is fundamentally changing how we approach education. We are
collectively reimagining the very role and purpose of schooling, moving decisively away from the outdated factory model of the past and making the College, Career, and Student-focused (CPSF) experience real for every single child. This work is deeply grounded in elevating student voice and cultivating individual purpose.
As we look forward, our involvement with the coming AI Summit in March exemplifies our dedication to leading the nation in educational innovation. We have established AUHSD as a powerful, forward-thinking force, and I am confident that the District will continue to serve as a national showcase for innovation and excellence for many years to come.
In these moments of great change and uncertainty, we must remember the power of our collective spirit. As Franklin D. Roosevelt famously said, "The only thing we have to fear is
fear itself." With that resolute affirmation, we move forward. The District represents hope and belief for our entire community, and together, we have built a culture of "Unlimited
You."
Thank you again for the privilege of your support and collaboration over this remarkable
period.
With deepest respect.
Michael Matsuda
