🏆 Honoring a Legend. Dr. Diane Shammas.
At our Arab American Heritage Gala — Showing Up Like Hope — we had the profound honor of presenting the Lifetime Service Award to one of the most remarkable women in our community. 🤍
Dr. Diane Shammas has lived multiple lifetimes of achievement in one.
She is a scholar who earned her PhD in international, intercultural, and urban higher education from USC — and used that knowledge to teach at universities in Gaza and support mental health research at the Gaza Community Mental Health Programme.
She is a trailblazing entrepreneur who opened her own retail boutiques in Los Angeles and Newport Beach, built a nationally distributed wholesale footwear brand, and proved that Arab American women belong at every table — including the ones they build themselves.
She is a published voice for her people — her powerful essay “In Retrospect: An American Educator in Gaza” appears in Sumud: A New Palestinian Reader (Seven Stories Press, 2025), alongside a recent publication in the Journal of Palestine Studies.
And she is a fierce community advocate — recognized with the Alex Odeh Memorial Award, a Lifetime Achievement Award from Access California Services, and two Humanitarian Awards from Cal State Fullerton for her groundbreaking support of SWANA students and programs.
Dr. Shammas, your life’s work is a testament to what it means to show up — for your community, for your people, and for the truth. This award belongs to you many times over. We are deeply honored to call you one of our own. 👏🏽
🌟 Congratulations, Dr. Diane Shammas — Lifetime Service Award Honoree, Arab American Civic Council 15th Anniversary Gala.
