Aquaponics, is a sustainable food production system that integrates conventional aquaculture, (raising aquatic animals), with hydroponics (cultivating plants in water) in a symbiotic environment. In aquaculture, effluents accumulate in the water, increasing toxicity for the fish. With Aquaponics, this water is led to a hydroponic grow bed where the fish waste is broken down by nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Plants are then grown in the beds to absorb the nutrient rich fertilizer that is left behind as a byproduct from the filtration process. This zero waste system recirculates the water, creating an optimum growing environment for both fish and edible plants. A perfect solution for urban / resource deficient environments.

Great day today with Anaheim Union High School District students participating in the Anaheim Innovative Mentoring Experience (AIME) at The Riverbed Farm. These students have decided to help us create a worm composting system to help us educate, empower and employ members of the community in a big way!

They will be planning, fundraising and building the worm composting system in just 6 weeks. They will also be training the public and our community partners on how to build and care for a worm composting system. Keep an eye out for opportunities to support this project and to come learn how you can help reduce organic waste and create a valuable garden ammendment.
