At Founder’s Park in Anaheim, CA there are several historically significant structures that recall the city’s agricultural heritage. One important landmark is the Mother Colony House. Built in 1857 by George Hansen as his home and office, it is the oldest surviving wood framed building in Orange County. Hansen is often recognized as the “Father of Anaheim”, having founded the town in 1857 along with fifty German colonists. The house sits in an area once surrounded by a thousand acres of vineyards that enjoyed a successful viticulture industry until a blight devastated the crops between 1884 and 1888. Citrus groves replaced the vineyards by the 1890’s and inspired the area’s name we know today as Orange County. The Mother Colony House is listed as both a California Historical Landmark and on the National Register of Historic Places.
