Upcoming TLT Concerts for April & May!
Saturday, April 18
Joel Rafael and daughter Jamaica Rafael
Note: This concert will include a single music set (about 70 min.) starting usual time (7:30 pm). After the music, Joel and Jamaica will be available to talk with concert-goers and fans.
The critically-acclaimed singer/songwriter Joel Rafael (vocals and guitar) returns to our stage with his daughter Jamaica Rafael (fiddle, viola, vocals). Joel has chronicled his life and the world around him with passionate songwriting roots in the folk tradition.
Joel began performing in showcases and small clubs around Southern CA in the early 70s. In 1981, he toured with Jesse Colin Young and released his debut album, Dharma Bums. Joel won Kerrville’s new folk award in 1995 and gained national airplay with the seminal Joel Rafael Band. He composed and performed all original music for the LA Theatre Words production of The Grapes of Wrath in 2002 and toured the Southwest with Joan Baez in 2003. No influence is more obvious in his work than that of Woody Guthrie, with whom he shares five co-writes, and Joel has been a featured performer at the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival for 27 years.
“Joel Rafael’s songs are fill with passion and compassion; passion for social justice and compassion for those among us who have to struggle for a place at the table of American prosperity. His voice is unmistakably his own, big, warm, and strong, and a conductor for the human emotions that connect us all.”
- Jackson Browne
Saturday, May 16
The Celtic trio Stepwise will provide us with an exciting evening of Irish music, with Liam Lewis (mandolin, guitar, fiddle, voice), Olivia Breidenthal (fiddle and voice), and All-Ireland Champion bones player James Yoshizawa (percussion).
Stepwise performs a mixture of traditional Irish songs with tight vocal harmonies and traditional Irish tune sets. Olivia is a practitioner of the Galway fiddle style with influences including Kevin Burke, the Kane Sisters, and Liz Carrol. The instrumental arrangements of Stepwise feature intricate twin fiddles or groovy rhythm guitar fit for a traditional Cheili and the discerning ears of an Irish-enthusiast audience.
As always, doors open at 7 pm, concerts at 7:30 pm.
