For decades, Sheila’s life was defined by unimaginable trauma, severe abuse that almost cost her life, and homelessness. But a few months ago, amidst chaos and dangerous conditions, Sheila made a brave choice: she was ready for a fresh start, no matter what it took.

Through her own incredible inner fortitude and the stability, respite, and life skills programs at the Anacortes Family Center, Sheila turned her life around. She got clean and sober, a change her children noticed right away, declaring, "Our mom is back."

Today, Sheila is celebrating a milestone 30 years in the making: moving into her very own apartment.

Now, Sheila wants to pay it forward by helping other women escape abuse and reclaim control of their futures. Her journey is a powerful reminder of what resilience, healing, and community support can achieve.

𝗔𝗙𝗖 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗠𝗨𝗡𝗜𝗧𝗬 𝗢𝗨𝗧𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗖𝗛 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗠: 𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗔𝗙𝗖 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗼𝗿𝘀?

While many know us for our emergency shelter, transitional shelter, and affordable housing, one of our most impactful programs is AFC’s Outreach Program.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵?

Our Outreach Services are designed for individuals and families who do not enter our emergency shelter, such as single men, individuals currently housed but facing unstable conditions or imminent eviction, or unsheltered folks who need a different pathway.

Instead of turning people away, our Community Resource Coordinator, Grace, meets clients where they are. Outreach is completely client-led and relationship-driven, focused on meeting the client's short- and long-term goals. Services often last several months, until objectives are accomplished and clients successfully transition into better living situations.

𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗜𝘁 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 & 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗜𝘁 𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗽𝘀

• Grace works hands-on with clients to clear the hurdles that lead to or prolong homelessness:

• Housing & Stability: Navigating landlord-tenant issues, preventing evictions, and finding temporary or permanent housing.

• Employment & Legal Support: Building resumes, job searching, addressing outstanding warrants, and resolving legal issues.

• Healthcare & Long-Term Care: Establishing primary care doctors and dentists, navigating health insurance, and applying for long-term care like assisted living or adult group homes.

• Essential Benefits & Basic Needs: Assisting with applications for EBT (food stamps), TANF, Aged, Blind & Disabled (ABD) benefits, childcare subsidies, phone access, and connecting clients with local food banks.

• Community Diversion: We partner closely with the local Police and Fire Departments. When officers or first responders are called to assist someone in need, they can connect with AFC to divert individuals away from the criminal justice system and directly into compassionate care.

𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀!

Because our work is deep and long-term, transitions take time. That’s why we are thrilled to share that in September alone, 6 Outreach clients completed services!

This means 6 individuals and families achieved permanent housing and/or accomplished their goals to better their living situation. Having six graduations in a single month is an exceptionally high milestone, and we couldn't be prouder of this essential community program.

Earlier today, we shared why monetary funding is so vital to keeping our doors open, but right now, we have an urgent physical need that money alone can't immediately solve: Men’s Underwear. It’s one of the most basic essentials, yet it is consistently one of our most requested and least donated items.

We urgently need sizes Large (L) and Extra Large (XL) to directly support:

𝗙𝗨𝗡𝗗𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗦: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀

In our first post on how funding works for us, we touched on the fact that AFC's success doesn't equal financial independence. In other words, as our success grows, the need for our services doesn't go away; it means we have become better at finding and meeting the need.

Here are some examples from some of our partners to illustrate the point: a food program like A Simple Gesture doesn't become unnecessary because it distributes more and more food each year. Likewise, a free clothing program like Rachel's Closet doesn't reach a point of not being needed as it serves more people over time. As more clients use the services of Skagit Legal Aid, that organization is not nearing a magical "self-funding" point.

Your contributions to AFC help create capacity in our organization, meaning they help us do more and do better. They don't move us along to a day when we don't need investment by the community. We expect to do valuable work in Anacortes as far as we can see into the future, and we will always need you with us!

DID YOU KNOW WHAT IT TAKES?
When you are in survival mode, even the simplest tasks can feel insurmountable. For many of our clients, 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗵𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

Imagine trying to secure a job, sign a lease, or apply for services without a birth certificate, ID, or Social Security card. Many clients don't have these documents, and when you are focused on basic survival, navigating the complex government systems to replace them is simply too overwhelming.

Yet, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗰𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴. That is where our dedicated team, Bea, Rachel, Bee, and Grace, steps in. What makes our shelter unique is our hands-on approach, even to help people who don't qualify for our program, such as single men. The team doesn't just hand clients a checklist and wish them luck.

𝗪𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝘁𝗼:
• Navigate the confusing paperwork and government databases.
• Help cover the fees associated with ordering official records.
• Physically walk them through the process step-by-step until those vital documents are safely in their hands.

It is a quiet, incredibly vital step that doesn't always make the headlines, but it is the foundation upon which our clients rebuild their lives. We are so proud of our Case Management team for doing whatever it takes to help our clients move from survival to stability!

Karen Yost, Rachel Davis, and Bea De La Rosa recently returned from the National Women’s Shelter Network (NWSN) Annual Conference, full of inspiration, new tools, and a renewed commitment to our mission!

Beyond learning from leaders across the country, our team was honored to present AFC's Rent Ready curriculum and annual report to attendees from all over the country, receiving fantastic feedback and building strong national partnerships.

Here’s a quick look at what resonated most with each of our team members:

𝗥𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗹: 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝘂𝗺𝗮-𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 & 𝗛𝗼𝗽𝗲
•Lead with curiosity, not assumptions: Looking past labels to ask what support clients need to feel safe.
•Choice & Consistency: Restoring client autonomy and building trust through reliable follow-through.
•Intake Sanctuaries: Creating calm, welcoming spaces with simple comforts and sensory items for kids during intake.

𝗕𝗲𝗮: 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻-𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲 & 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀
•Viewing Clients as "Guests": Adopting person-centered language and practices to ensure families feel genuinely welcomed.
•TBI Screening: Bringing back specialized strategies from a domestic violence shelter to better identify and support survivors showing signs of Traumatic Brain Injury.
•Team Training: Planning to bring NWSN Crisis Prevention Intervention tools to our whole team.

•Harnessing Volunteer Power: Finding new strategies to cultivate impactful volunteer opportunities that expand our reach.
•Supporting Moms & Kids: Gaining deeper approaches to address stress, trauma, and mental health in shelter settings.
•National Collaboration: Exchanging resources and building peer networks with shelters nationwide.

Connecting with others who share this passion reminded our amazing team that while the work is hard, hope is the seed of motivation.

𝗙𝗨𝗡𝗗𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗦: 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

In our tightly-knit community, people have noticed AFC's growth--more housing, added staff with special expertise, and more robust programs (like Life Skills) that yield an even better chance for clients to become self-sufficient for life. In addition, people see us more often than in the past, at community gatherings like Open Streets and at our ever-growing events like Dine & Shop.

AFC feels like a maturing organization these days, and we hear that some folks have concluded we no longer need support.

We can assure you, the opposite is true! We have expanded and succeeded because of you, our generous supporters. AFC's growth actually means we need consistent funding to maintain the quality of our programs and to respond to increasing needs that stem from greater awareness of our services.

We'll be the first to acknowledge that funding a nonprofit is a more complex challenge than the average person knows about. But since you follow our work, we think you might want to understand how the challenge looks from our side. We invite you to stay tuned to this short series and we hope it sparks your interest.

INSIDE OUR NETWORK: We are so proud of the many organizations that partner with us in town! We are all part of the fabric of the community, and we all want Anacortes residents to thrive.

There's one group of partners that really embodies the spirit of win-win: businesses that hire AFC clients from time to time.

Employers fill a position that can often be time-consuming to recruit for, and one of our clients takes another step toward establishing a productive life here in town.
