Anaconda Family Resource Center

Anaconda Family Resource Center AFRC promotes strength and stability of families through our programs by:
supporting parents The initial focus for programs and services was intervention.

The Anaconda Family Resource Center pictures a future in which all families receive and fully use the basic skills, education, support, and encouragement necessary for the development of healthy families. Anaconda Family Resource Center | Community Youth Center

In 1982, the Anaconda Family Resource Center opened its doors to address the high incidence of child abuse and neglect in the Southwest M

ontana rural area of Deer Lodge County. But need for additional services became obvious and the center was expanded to include preventative services. In October of 2004, after school services began to provide a safe place for youth to go while not in school. These preventative services for youth are provided through the Community Youth Center. Our mission is to assure all families receive the basic skills, education, support, and encouragement necessary for the development of healthy families. All programs offered through the center are designed around this premise. A fundraising formula has been developed to make sure our services can continue for generations to come. This formula consists of seeking grants through local, state and federal sources; small fees for some services; state and local giving and through fundraisers. Our services include:

Partnership Program
The Partnership Program is designed to increase the strength and stability of families; increase parents’ confidence and competence in their parenting ability; afford children a safe, stable and supportive family environment; and to otherwise enhance child development. Our staff facilitates these necessary changes through the following services. In-Home Visit - Home Visits are done on a regular basis throughout the duration of services. Initially, they are performed on a weekly basis for two to four hours per visit. As time and services progress, the time duration can be modified considerably. During Home Visits, the Family Development Specialist discusses the Family Service Plan as well as topics pertinent to the client’s success. This includes but is not limited to budgeting, time management, family interaction and behaviors, work related issues, or other needed services. Parenting Classes - Circle of Security Parenting for children 0-5.
8 classes : Learning the communication cues and emotional needs of the young child. Learning to help young children manage their emotions. Managing the child's emotions when they are unable. Nurturing Parenting - 0-5 & 6-12, 16 classes: Learning physical and emotional needs of children, how to identify the needs and cues and how to care for their physical needs. Visit/Family Time Coaching - for those families whose children have been removed from the home by CPS. Family Development Specialists help and/or teach parent/s to be more aware of the child's emotional needs as well as physical needs. How to identify how a non-verbal baby is trying to communicate and how to respond. How to identify emotional needs and teach young children how to manage and organize them. How to urn visits into real family time. During these visits, parents are being observed for parent/child interaction, potentially harmful behaviors, appropriate
behaviors/responses and overall attentiveness. CASA/GAL Program
When a child is removed from their home, they need to have representation in the court system. The CASA/GAL volunteer role is to provide advocacy services (in the court system) for abused, neglected and/or abandoned children. CASA/GAL volunteers are pro bono and their role includes investigating the case, attending meetings pertinent to the children, and providing input to and monitoring of the parents’ treatment plan. Stress and Anger Management Classes
Many of our clients are dealing with stress and/or anger issues. To help eliminate these issues, the center offers Stress and Anger Management Classes twice weekly. Classes consist of twenty sessions dealing with five triggers. The primary purpose of the classes is to assist people in changing patterns of behavior that are inappropriate, counter-productive, and/or dangerous to themselves or others.

For over forty years AFRC's mission has been to end child abuse and neglect in Deer Lodge, Powell and Granite Counties. Whether it's parenting classes, or being the voice for children in foster care through our CASA Advocates, we are here. We are looking forward to 2025 and additional new programs to mentor young folks, help families deal with food insecurity issues and the start up of a Food Pharmacy to promote good health and wellness.

As we approach the end of another year I want to remind you that donations to the Anaconda Family Resource Center are tax deductible and can be made in person, via the mail, or by visiting our website .org

Thank you ALL for supporting us through the years! Together we make families, and our community stronger.

You may have seen a story in the Leader this week about a non profit in Anaconda serving foster children that are aging out of the foster care system.

THEY ARE NOT US NOR ARE THEY AFFILIATED with CASA of Southwest Montana and AFRC.

We have never heard of Foster Kids United, nor has Action Inc, the organization that is contracted through the Chaffee Foundation's Foster Care Independence Program to work with foster children in our region. https://dphhs.mt.gov/CFSD/fostercareindependence/index

The Anaconda Family Resource Center and our CASA program serve 25-35 children at any one time in Deer Lodge, Powell and Granite Counties. We have a mentoring program approved by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention specifically for children in foster care. We support foster parents with free parenting classes, and our CASA Advocates are the voice for foster children in the judicial system, and report monthly to the court on the status of children in foster care.

Please use caution if you are considering a donation to Foster Kids United.

DPHHS is offering one-time incentive payments to recruit employees at Montana’s state-run health care facilities. For more information go to Work4DPHHS.com

Helena, Montana, July 18, 2024 —In partnership with the Otto Bremer Trust, the Montana
Community Foundation awarded $1.5 million in grants to Montana nonprofits through the Otto
Bremer Trust Community Responsive Fund. The Montana Community Foundation was selected
by the Otto Bremer Trust as a philanthropic intermediary partner to administer and distribute
$1.5 million in funds for grants ranging from $10,000 - $75,000 to support Montana
organizations that directly respond to immediate challenges and opportunities in the community.
“It is an honor to continue fulfilling the vision and mission set out by Otto Bremer 80 years ago to
support organizations and causes throughout our region that are meeting the most critical needs
of the community,” said Daniel Reardon, co-CEO and trustee, Otto Bremer Trust.
Grants were awarded to organizations with missions or program purposes that address relevant

stated the Montana Community Foundation President & CEO, Mary Rutherford. “This
opportunity allows us to make a real impact, but we recognize there is more to accomplish in
helping communities thrive.”

Why become a CASA volunteer? CASA Advocates report to the Court every month how the child is doing, and advocate for what is in the best interest of the child. Foster kids in Deer Lodge, Granite and Powell Counties need advocates. The commitment they are asking for is on average about 10 hours a month. This video is from CASA Utah, but the program in Montana is no different. You can make a huge difference in a child's life! If you are interested in becoming a CASA Advocate call us at 406-563-7972

The Kinship Navigator program here in Anaconda is going well. Currently we have a group of Kinship caregivers (relatives raising other relatives' children) that meets once a month, the second Tuesday at the Forge Hotel in the board room from 11-12ish. We can go longer if needed with the group or individuals. It's pretty casual. We share circumstances and problems. We offer one another help and support. Our area has a lot of resources available, and my job is to help caregivers find them.
I am beginning another group through Kinship Navigator for caregivers of anyone; your spouse, your neighbor, your adult child, maybe it is your job to care for people, anyone doing any caregiving of other people. The date and location will be the same, but the meeting time will be 1-2ish. The goal is the same as stated above. If you are interested, please either message me or just show up.
Everyone needs support and help when life is hard. Even when you think you don't. Come and join us.

Well, today didn't go as we hoped but it's in the hardest of times we learn the best lessons and feel the most gratitude.
Buffy was scheduled to have her teeth cleaned and removed today but Dr. Mac had a gut feeling she needed to look at some lab work before putting her under anesthesia. She was right; Buffy showed signs of advanced kidney failure so anesthesia was not an option and as a family we decided that the kindest and most loving thing to do would be to let her go before she lost her will to live and stopped eating and drinking.
I wouldn't have dreamed of leaving Robbie out of this decision or not allowing him to be part of the entire process so I immediately went and picked him up from school. On the way there he told me he wanted to be the one to hold her when she went to heaven. And of course, I gave him that honor. On the way home I told him how proud I was of him for understanding the importance of caring for old animals and helping to make sure they never ever suffer.
This is what he said...
(And for those of you who don't know, Robbie was adopted from the foster care system after years of severe abuse and neglect.)
"I know how it feels not to be loved or cared for and I don't want any animal of mine to ever feel that way. It's only sad for us when they go to heaven. It's a happy day for them. Thank you for being proud of me. Are you ok, Mom?"
From the mouths of babes.
(As our story is being shared more and more I feel like I need to add a little more context and also give you a deeper glimpse into the heart of my son. We adopt senior dogs. Robbie LOVES adopting senior dogs. He is sadly aware the longer a child remains in foster care the less likely they are to be adopted. He told me once "if all you guys had wanted was a baby, you would have never gotten me." He relates to our "old people" (that's what we call our senior dogs) in much the same way.
He has also reminded me on several occasions that it doesn't matter how long you have something for how much you love it. I asked him what he meant and he said "well you've only known me for two years but you love me like it's been forever." Yes, my son is the coolest.)
