A message from Nicole Feeney, Senior Director of Oak Hill Centers:

"To Our Oak Hill Camps and Recreation Community,

It’s been a little while since we checked in with you. Last we wrote, we shared some heavy news regarding our programming in Summer 2023. As you may know, we were not able to open for traditional residential camp at Camp Hemlocks last summer due to a lack of available staff. This was a difficult reality to cope with. We shared with you then that it was our hope and intention to bring camp back for Summer 2024.

A lot has happened over the past year. First, the Hemlocks Center became the proud recipient of a federal grant to upgrade our beloved center and expand its mission. The Hemlocks Center will be undergoing construction in an effort to modernize the amenities and provide services to more individuals with disabilities. We will be closed through Summer 2024 as we complete these much-needed renovations.

Finally, in this competitive job market, it remains difficult to recruit the necessary staff to ensure a safe and happy camp experience for all. With that in mind, we are pleased to announce that we will be moving forward with residential camp at Camp Harkness in Waterford this summer! Due to limited staffing, we will only be accepting applicants from within our Oak Hill Community Programs and through the Connecticut Bureau of Rehabilitation Services (BRS) Level Up program.

We realize this programming adjustment might be frustrating and confusing to many of our long-time campers and their families. Please know that our goal is to open the camp experience up to the public again soon. We are optimistic that the renovations at Camp Hemlocks will provide for an inclusive, supportive environment for all individuals with disabilities for many years to come. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at [email protected]."

Dear Oak Hill Family,

We are reaching out to you with some important messaging from Oak Hill Centers, more specifically our Camps and Recreation program.

The planning we do this time of year is critical to the success of our summer programs. One of our biggest focuses is recruiting dedicated and passionate staff necessary to offer high-quality programs with the appropriate support which ensures a fun and safe experience for all.

The immense struggle with staffing continues to be a disappointing reality. After exhausting all potential possibilities to host residential camp at Oak Hill’s two camp locations this summer, we regret to share Camp Harkness and Camp Hemlocks will not run residential camp for the summer of 2023. It is our hope and intention to resume traditional residential camping for the summer of 2024, however, we will also be exploring all ways we can meet your needs through services offered by Oak Hill Camps and Recreation.

In an effort to provide accessible, family friendly activities to our campers, camper groups and the community THIS SUMMER, we will be offering alternative recreational opportunities at both camp facilities and on the road, such as:
- Group swim days
- Camp for the day
- Overnight camp outs
- Mobile camp activities (such as Camp to You)

Contact our Director of Camps and Recreation, Jillian McCarthy at [email protected] or 860-769-3855 for more information!
Additionally, we will be following up in the next few weeks with more details surrounding these services and how you can get started. But feel free to let us know you’re interested.

Please know it is still our focus to create programming that empowers and enhances the lives of our campers. We love camp just as much as you do, and we look forward to seeing you soon. As always, thank you for your continued support!

Camp Hemlocks was honored to host for a tour of our facilities and programming yesterday afternoon! Representative Courtney advocated for Easterseals of Oak Hill to receive special project funds in the recently passed FY 2023 Consolidated Appropriations Act. Thanks to Representative Courtney, our Hemlocks facility will receive $1.8 million in support from the federal government to fund capital and facility improvements that will enhance accessibility and expand our year round programming. We can’t thank you enough, Representative Courtney!

Last week, we were honored to host First Lady Annie Lamont at Camp Hemlocks. She enjoyed a tour and then graciously addressed last week’s cohort of campers, many of whom who are transitioning from high school to the next phase of life. Mrs. Lamont spoke on the importance of finding something you’re passionate about and pursuing it, advising our campers that it can often take time to find the right career. She encouraged tenacity, diligence, and hard work. The campers listened attentively to her address and were very taken by her remarks. In the Q and A that followed, they asked fantastic questions. One camper asked what advice her current self would give to her past self. Very wisely, Mrs. Lamont remarked that “I would tell myself that it will all work out.” This wonderful message will resonate with our campers as they take their next steps into the world. Thank you so much for taking the time to visit us, Mrs. Lamont!

Special thanks to Board Chair Spencer Cain and Members Wiley Mullins, Michael Hannah, David Porteus, and Hillary Glass for attending and supporting this landmark visit. OAK HILL
