As we celebrate America’s 250th birthday, we want to take a moment to honor the incredible history right here in our own backyard. Perth Cemetery is the final resting place of true American patriots, including Private John McKinley (1750–1811).
John was a Scottish Highlander who settled in our local area and answered the call to serve during the Revolutionary War. He served our country as a skilled Artillery Artificer, a vital role tasked with building, maintaining, and repairing the weaponry and equipment needed by the artillery regiments on the front lines. After the war, he and his wife Sarah Benedict raised a large family of 14 children. John was also the great uncle of President William McKinley. The spelling of "McKinlay" on the stone is the original Scottish spelling, later to become Americanized as McKinley.
Today, as you enjoy the fireworks, family, and freedom, please join us in remembering the local heroes like John McKinley who helped pave the way for the nation we celebrate today.
