ATTENTION: Recruiting YOUTH mountaineers and ADULT chaperones. Mountaineer, safety and leadership training will be provided.
GOAL: Summit of the Grand Teton – July 2018
TITLE: Summer 2018 Grand Teton Super Event
DESCRIPTION: The Mountain Goat Patrol* of the BPSA 69th Rangers Pathfinder Troop is organizing themselves for the 2018 summer climbing season and has decided the summit of the Grand Teton shall be their goal. To that end, training starts in October and proceeds through July.
If you, or anyone you know is in the age of 11 -17 and want to participate on preparing for this adventure, please contact the Troop Scoutmaster (information below) to register.
COMMITMENT: Because this is youth involvement, we will follow BPSA Youth Protection Guidelines. Likewise, all participants (youth and adults) must register with BPSA which includes a background check. Registration is $20. All participants will have at least the BPSA Activity T-Shirt $20 (additional uniform items are optional). All participants will wrangle their own backpacking gear (borrow or purchase on own – see link to gear list below -- most mountaineering gear can be borrowed or rented [helmets, harness, rappel device, ice axe, crampons]). Expect one in-town preparation meeting per month, and one overnighter activity per month. Each activity will be about $5 for transportation + individual cost of food.
EXPECTATION: This is a journey, not a destination. Not everyone will make it - this time. We'll have an appropriate additional Super Event (TBD) for those unable to attend this one, or those who try but cannot qualify on the required skills.
REQUIREMENT FOR ATTENDEES: To qualify for the Grand Teton Super Event participants will have to show proficiency in the following skills which we will train:
1. Mountain First Aid
2. Steep Snow Travel with Crampons and Ropes and Harness
3. Ice Axe Arrest
4. Crevasse Rescue (Crampons, Ice Axe, Pulley, Rope, Harness)
5. Backpacking and Overnight Cold Weather
6. Overnighting in Snow Shelter of Own Making (Igloo, snow cave or quonset)
7. Free Overhang Rappel
8. Basic Rock Climbing
9. Summit the following peaks: Table Mountain, Borah and one other 11,000 ft peak.
10. Attain BPSA Tenderfoot and 2nd Class (Adults must attain Tenderfoot and Squire).
NOTE TO PARENTS: Your participation is wanted, but not mandatory. However at least one guardian must simultaneously register with their youth/child. This is co-ed – but youth couples may not tent together. Tenting is by section (youth with youth Pathfinders, adults with adult Rovers): ergo adults will not tent with youth. All activities are chaperoned/supervised in accordance with YPT Guidelines (see BPSA website).
ADULT TRAINING: Oct 6-8 Brownsea Training Course (BPSA Bootcamp) adult training available. $55 per person – includes camping site fee and all food. Additional courses available in the spring (the October BTC will be at City of Rocks).

The 69th Rangers Scout Group is a family-oriented volunteer group which has background-checks to ensure vetting of individuals and training of adults interacting with children and youth. We follow the policies and procedures of the BPSA and WFIS organizations. Idaho Falls iHike (IF iHike) is an open-community which requested a more structured approach for families and young people.
