69th Rangers Scout Group

69th Rangers Scout Group Welcome! BPSA & the 69th Rangers Scout Group are committed to providing an appropriate traditional and community-oriented scouting experience.

The 69th Rangers is a coed, inclusive, traditional scouting group in Southeast Idaho that is part of the Baden-Powell Service Association - Traditional Adventures (BPSA-TA). A Traditional Scouting Association for the US that is open to boys and girls, men and women and focused on a traditional, open, and inclusive outdoor program. The 69th Rangers welcome everyone, regardless of race, gender, sexu

al orientation, religion (or no-religion), ability or other differentiating factors. Our mission is to provide a positive learning environment within the context of democratic participation and social justice. We foster the development of scouts in an environment of mutual respect and cooperation. Scouting is an outdoor movement and that is part of its character. The appeal of true scouting has always been to that element of the vagabond, pioneer and explorer which is part of our nature, and is at its most evident in youth. BPSA focuses on this aspect of the program; and encourages our scouts, parents and volunteers to plan programs that take advantage of being out of doors, whenever and wherever possible! Scouts interested in joining the 69th Rangers; please contact the group scoutmaster: Dave McGrath. david.o.mcgrath(@)gmail.com

It is the pleasure of the BPSA 69th Ranger Scout Group to announce Peggy S. Scott, of Nacogdoches,Texas as a Baden-Powell Service Association (BPSA) Rover Squire Scout.

On 20 August she completed her examination for Tenderfoot and Squire as a member of the Lone Scout Section, under the supervision of the Lone Scout Section Leader Susan Pesznecker and the remote mentorship of BPSA Rover Knight Dave McGrath of the 69th Rangers in Idaho. As her remote BPSA mentor and following the model established by his mentor Sir Ethan Jewett and following the procedure in the BPSA Rover Handbook – let us receive her and welcome her as Rover Squire Scout Peggy S. Scott.

Squire Peggy S. Scott became aware of the BPSA-US program through her interaction with international scouting as she was looking for a fully inclusive model of scouting supporting her own family following the traditional pattern set out by Lord Robert Baden-Powell. She was introduced to the larger, fully affirmative and inclusive forms of international scouting by Sir Kamil Podlaha of Prague, CR and efforts of other scouting inclusion activists on discussion boards. She is motivated by her life-long devotion to The Scout Law and her own family situation and history.

Squire Peggy has over 20 years of scouting and outdoor experience. She’s worked with youth and adults on program development and implementation. She’s a Doctor of Education retired from 33 years at the Stephen F. Austin State University where she conducted Title IX investigations (sexual assault/sexual misconduct) and was the chief conduct officer. She brings with her degrees in communications, student personnel and guidance and counselling. She is a licensed professional counselor in Texas.

Squire Peggy holds a second-degree black belt in Taekwondo, was in the first all-girl calf scramble in Texas, and has years of sea-scouting and is a master of small sailboats and competes in yacht racing.

Squire Peggy desires to create a nucleus of BPSA Rover Scouts in her Nacogdoches, TX and is busy recruiting other adults and their families. If she is successful, this will be the first BPSA unit in East Texas – the closest units to her are about 4 hours away near Austin. She is currently scheduled to attend the Brownsea Training Course (BTC) in Texas this November.

Again: it is my pleasure and delight to welcome Peggy S. Scott, Squire, as a new member of our fellowship.

Squire Peggy: in accordance with your successful examination and by the authority vested in me by LSL Pesznecker as your mentor you are now authorized to wear a BPSA uniform, affix the WFIS sigil and the Tenderfoot badge, Squire epaulet and wear the BPSA Lone Scout red neckerchief. Welcome aboard!

Won’t you please receive her and extend a warm welcome to her?

Scouting values mean looking for opportunities to be of service. This also means reaching out to underserved communities of American citizens as part of our social justice mission. The BPSA 69th Rangers Scout Group calls providing presentation of national patriotic symbols to these communities "Citizenship in the Nation" and invite all to participate who are able and willing.

TITLE: Summer 2018 Grand Teton Super Event

DESCRIPTION: The Mountain Goat Patrol* of the BPSA 69th Rangers Pathfinder Troop is organizing themselves for the 2018 summer climbing season and has decided the summit of the Grand Teton shall be their goal. To that end, training starts in October and proceeds through July.
If you, or anyone you know is in the age of 11 -17 and want to participate on preparing for this adventure, please contact the Troop Scoutmaster (information below) to register.

COMMITMENT: Because this is youth involvement, we will follow BPSA Youth Protection Guidelines. Likewise, all participants (youth and adults) must register with BPSA which includes a background check. Registration is $20. All participants will have at least the BPSA Activity T-Shirt $20 (additional uniform items are optional). All participants will wrangle their own backpacking gear (borrow or purchase on own – see link to gear list below -- most mountaineering gear can be borrowed or rented [helmets, harness, rappel device, ice axe, crampons]). Expect one in-town preparation meeting per month, and one overnighter activity per month. Each activity will be about $5 for transportation + individual cost of food.

EXPECTATION: This is a journey, not a destination. Not everyone will make it - this time. We'll have an appropriate additional Super Event (TBD) for those unable to attend this one, or those who try but cannot qualify on the required skills.

REQUIREMENT FOR ATTENDEES: To qualify for the Grand Teton Super Event participants will have to show proficiency in the following skills which we will train:
1. Mountain First Aid
2. Steep Snow Travel with Crampons and Ropes and Harness
3. Ice Axe Arrest
4. Crevasse Rescue (Crampons, Ice Axe, Pulley, Rope, Harness)
5. Backpacking and Overnight Cold Weather

All activities are chaperoned/supervised in accordance with YPT Guidelines (see BPSA website).

ADULT TRAINING: Oct 6-8 Brownsea Training Course (BPSA Bootcamp) adult training available. $55 per person – includes camping site fee and all food. Additional courses available in the spring (the October BTC will be at City of Rocks).
