During summer months, water conservation is particularly important, and it takes only a few simple changes to do your part. First, make sure your house is leak-free. Many homes have hidden water leaks that waste gallons upon gallons of water. To find out if you have a leak, read your water meter, wait two hours, steering clear of using any water during this time, and read it again. If the reading is different, you have a leak in your home. Be sure to monitor around your washer and dryer and under your sinks, as these are some key places in which leaks can occur. Want to save even more money? Visit us at www.longislandgreenhomes.org to arrange a FREE home energy audit.

Hotter temperatures can lead to more energy usage and higher electric bills. Here are 5 tips to help minimize the impact of hot weather and better manage your usage: 1. Prevent air leaks around window air conditioners with foam insulation or weather-stripping. 2. Keep out the sun’s heat by closing drapes and blinds. 3. Set your thermostat higher when you’re out of the house. 4. Install a programmable thermostat and use fans to circulate cool air. 5. Replace air filters monthly. Dirty filters make your air conditioner work harder. Want to save even more money. Call Long Island Green Homes today for a FREE home energy audit paid for by New York State (a $450 value). 800.567.2850 or visit longislandgreenhomes.org
