CHD's Not Bread Alone

CHD's Not Bread Alone Not Bread Alone is a community meal program that offers FREE homemade, hot meals and groceries. We are here for you. All are welcome! Wednesdays: 4:00 p.m.

Not Bread Alone is open for three meals a week and on Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving and Christmas in the lower level dining room of the First Congregational Church in Amherst, 165 Main St., Amherst. Saturdays: 12 p.m. Sundays: 12 p.m. We use local vegetables as the focus of our meals, and offer both meat and vegetarian options. We do NOT close for snowstorms or inclement weather. And Easter Sunday,

Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years. Groceries and other items are distributed at 12:30 p.m. every Saturday. The program has two kitchen leaders who alternate days: Bob Stover (Program Supervisor and Volunteer Coordinator), and Connie Conn. They depend on the wonderful help of great volunteers to make the meals possible, as well as taking on extra tasks, such as laundry, recycling, and watering the garden! There are always exciting new projects to be explored, as long as there are people interested and able to carry them out. We welcome your enthusiasm! If you are interested in volunteering (including special projects such as playing music during a meal, picking up veggie donations, planting gardens, etc.), please contact Program Supervisor and Volunteer Coordinator Bob Stover at [email protected], or (413) 548-1271.

In 1972, four revolutionaries gathered around a kitchen table to change the way we approach mental health care. For five decades, they and their legacy—the Center for Human Development (CHD)—have provided compassionate care and support to people in need from all walks of life across western Massachusetts and Connecticut.

Now, on CHD’s fiftieth anniversary, our nearly 2,000 skilled professional caregivers are proud to unveil a new look and promise for our organization, which has long stood strong at the heart of our community’s social safety net, and joined hands with thousands of people and families to find a way toward better lives.

At CHD, we believe there has never been a better time to ensure that all members of our community have a fair chance at opportunity. At CHD, we work tirelessly to empower people and communities with skills and resources to become self-sufficient and strong. At CHD, we see value, talent and inspiration in all people, no matter what struggle or toil they’re working through today.

At CHD, care finds a way.
