Are you planning to be at the PRINTING United Expo in Las Vegas this September?

We’d love to connect with PGCA members who will be attending and are considering putting together an informal member get-together during the show. Nothing formal, just a chance to relax, catch up, and spend some time with industry friends and colleagues.

If you’ll be in Las Vegas, and are interested in joining us for a PGCA get-together, email Kim Tuzzo at [email protected]

Knowing everyone’s travel schedules will help us choose a time that works for as many members as possible. We hope to see you in Vegas!

What makes Mary Katherine Goddard's story so important nearly 250 years later?

Because her work demonstrates the power of print to turn ideas into action.

The 1777 Goddard Broadside was among the first widely distributed versions of the Declaration of Independence to include the names of all 56 signers. By putting those names into print, Goddard helped make the Declaration a public statement of courage, accountability, and national purpose.
Her story is also a powerful reminder of how much the printing industry has changed—and how much its purpose has remained the same.

In 1777, printers produced broadsides, newspapers, and pamphlets that informed citizens and spread ideas of independence.

Today, our industry produces packaging, labels, books, direct mail, educational materials, signage, and commercial communications that inform, educate, connect, and support communities every day.

As part of PGCA's America Was Born in Print campaign, we're celebrating the printers, past and present, who help put ideas that matter into the hands of people.

🖊️ When we think about the Declaration of Independence, we remember the names of the Founding Fathers. But what about the printer who made sure Americans knew who had signed it?

Meet Mary Katherine Goddard.

In January 1777, the Continental Congress commissioned Goddard to print a new broadside of the Declaration of Independence. Unlike earlier copies, her edition included the names of all 56 signers, publicly identifying the men who had pledged their lives, fortunes, and honor to the American cause.
Goddard was one of the few female printers in colonial America. During the Revolutionary War, she operated a successful printing business in Baltimore, published newspapers and government documents, managed a bookstore, and served as Baltimore's postmaster.

Printing the Declaration with the names of the signers wasn't simply a job, it took courage. Had the Revolution failed, those names could have carried serious consequences.

Nearly 250 years later, the Goddard Broadside remains one of the most important printed documents of the American Revolution.

Mary Katherine Goddard reminds us that printers have always been more than people who produce documents. They help put important ideas into the hands of people, and preserve those ideas for generations to come.
