🎬STREAM ON GOETHE ON DEMAND

The worldwide Goethe-Institut streaming platform, Goethe on Demand, invites you to watch five [East] German classics. Each of the films represents one decade during DEFA’s active film production era (1946–1992).

Don’t miss this special opportunity to explore some of Germany’s most celebrated cinema.

JACOB THE LIAR (1974, dir. Frank Beyer)

Goethe on Demand announcement: “JACOB THE LIAR draws on author and scriptwriter Jurek Becker’s own experiences. As a child, Becker survived the Łódź ghetto and later Sachsenhausen concentration camp. He submitted the initial concept for the film to DEFA in 1963, but it was initially ignored. Only the success of the novel that later emerged from the idea led to the screen adaptation – one of DEFA’s most powerful films about humanity, courage and the fragile power of hope.”

🎥HELP TO STOP CUTS TO THE GERMAN FILM HERITAGE FUNDING PROGRAM!

We support the DEFA Foundation’s efforts to stop the budget cuts to the Film Heritage Funding Program. Without reliable funding for digitization projects, our DEFA films are at risk of disappearing!

In 2019, the German federal government, the states, and the Film Funding Agency approved the 10-year Film Heritage Funding Program. All German film heritage institutions were able to apply for funding to carry out the urgent digitization of film works from every decade of German cinematic history. The plan was to allocate 10 million euros annually to this program. Last year, these funds were cut—more precisely, nearly halved. Despite all efforts by the affected institutions, funding for 2026 was further reduced.

The approved cuts and the program’s expiration in 2028 threaten to significantly jeopardize the program’s achievements to date and to massively slow down or even derail projects that have already begun or are planned.

To prevent these drastic measures, we ask you to send your letter to federal agencies involved in the program. Help us preserve our cinematic heritage. Every bit of support helps!

FILM POSTER ARTIST OTTO KUMMERT TURNS 90!

This month, we celebrate the work of graphic artist Otto Kummert by showcasing ten of his remarkable DEFA film posters. Over the course of his career, he created 70+ posters for DEFA films and international productions. Each design reflects his distinctive, graphically minimalist approach—using color sparingly while conveying powerful visual ideas.

Poster 10 | THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING (1968/1987, dir. Heiner Carow)

Heiner Carow’s semi-autobiographical film, about a 16-year-old Hi**er Youth member who still believes in military victory in the spring of 1945, was not approved for final production, because officials argued that the film focused on an ordinary N**i follower, rather than an antifascist hero. They also criticized the modernist style of the film. Two decades later the project was finally reconstructed and released.

Graphic artist Otto Kummert created a visually outstanding poster for the theatrical release
capturing the young boy’s intense psychological crisis, guilt, and collapse of belief in one single image.

Poster 9 | THE AXE OF WANDSBEK (1951, dir. Falk Harnack)

Hamburg, Germany, 1934: Adolf Hi**er is about to visit the city. Hamburg’s ex*****oner falls ill and is unable to carry out the death sentences of four communists awaiting ex*****on. Fearing that this will disrupt Hi**er’s visit, SS leader Footh offers a bankrupt local butcher, Albert Teetjen, 2,000 marks to perform the ex*****ons. When this becomes known, Teetjen’s life begins to fall apart.

Despite positive reviews, the film was withdrawn shortly after its premiere because officials believed it portrayed the ex*****oner too sympathetically, potentially encouraging sympathy for perpetrators of N**i crimes. The film became the first ever to be banned in East Germany. In 1962, a shortened version of the film was screened. In 1982, to mark the 95th birthday of Arnold Zweig, author of The Axe of Wandsbek, a new poster for the film was created by Otto Kummert.

SYMPOSIUM: “DEFA LITERARY ADAPTATIONS” IN GERMANY

From May 21–22, international experts on East German cinema will commemorate the 80th anniversary of the East German DEFA Studio’s foundation. The symposium will discuss the significant role of literary adaptations in the DEFA oeuvre and these productions’ changing focus during the four decades of the film studio’s existence.

Mariana Ivanova, our Academic Director, will participate in the 2-day symposium in Halle, Germany, and give a talk titled, “The DEFA Film Library Presents: DEFA Literary Adaptations at Museums and Universities in the USA.” She will also participate in a panel discussion on “Preservation of DEFA Film Heritage” sharing the stage with Seán Allan (St Andrews University, UK), Michael Wedel (Film University KONRAD WOLF, Germany), and Stefanie Eckert (Head of the DEFA Foundation, Germany).

Mariana shared with us: “Literary adaptations on screen were crucial in recognizing DEFA as a cinema of prestige and avant-garde innovation in the US and worldwide. While works by Bertolt Brecht, Günter Kunert, Christa Wolf, Heiner Müller, Stefan Heym, and other East German authors were taught at US universities since the 1960s, it was only through the DEFA Film Library that students, cineastes, and researchers became aware of award-winning film adaptations, such as The Divided Heaven, Jacob the Liar, or Mother Courage and Her Children. I am excited to share with the symposium participants DEFA Film Library’s groundbreaking work in highlighting these adaptations at colleges and summer film institutes, as well as film festivals and retrospectives at MoMA in New York, the Wende-Museum in Los Angeles, the Coolidge Corner Theater in Boston and Amherst Cinema, among others.”

The symposium was organized by Paul Werner Wagner (freelance curator, Berlin) and Stephan Pabst (Martin Luther University, Halle-Wittenberg).
