Western Mass. Rights of Nature is co-sponsoring two big events this coming weekend with the Nolumbeka Project, which is dedicated to public education about Northeastern tribal heritage and interests. The Friday event is an indigenous speaker, Hartman Deetz, speaking on Rights of Nature for the Connecticut River, and the Saturday event is a social dance to which all people are invited, also led by Hartman Deetz and others.

We are a local group formed as part of the global Rights of Nature movement and driven by the recognition that our laws and institutions are inherently incapable of protecting the natural world and must be changed. Our work and vision are twofold:

1. Stop the extractive practices and destruction of our lands and waters by seeking to pass laws that confer standing and actionable rights on non-human living entities.

2. Shift the cultural view embedded in our society and laws that sees humans as separate and apart from the non-human world and nature as a commodity to be exploited at will for human need and corporate profit. Promote a different cultural view - one that emphasizes the relationships between, and interdependence of, all living things and understands that if we destroy the natural world we destroy ourselves.

We know that laws shape culture and that culture shapes laws, so we are working to change both.
