The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo continues to escalate, with hundreds of reported cases and deaths. Health officials warn the virus may have spread undetected for weeks, while shortages in medicine, protective equipment, and healthcare access make containment difficult. The current strain has no approved vaccine or treatment. (Reuters, Al Jazeera)
HOW IS THIS AFFECTING US?
At this time, none of the children or volunteers at GUAOA Orphanage have been diagnosed with Ebola. However, access to testing remains extremely limited.
Currently, 10 children are experiencing malaria-like symptoms, which are not believed to be related to Ebola. Ongoing illness, combined with limited access to medication, has made recovery difficult—many children are getting sick again before fully healing.
Schools remain open for now, but we are monitoring the situation closely and taking precautions each day.
Border closures are also making it harder to access essential supplies, medication, and financial support—causing delays for communities already facing significant challenges.
Even in the midst of uncertainty, our commitment remains the same: to protect and care for every child entrusted to us.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
You can support urgent, on-the-ground needs, including:
• medication and basic medical care
• food and potable water
• masks, gloves, and soap
• ongoing care for the children and staff
