We are thankful for the Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts and Rep. Priscila Souza for advancing this critical legislation.

The Olympia Place fire exposed a dangerous reality: staffing in Amherst is not keeping pace with the demands of our community. Our year-round population already pushes resources to the limit—and the arrival of thousands of students intensifies that strain to an unsustainable level.

This is not a future concern. It is happening now.

This legislation is essential to ensure staffing levels reflect real-world conditions—not only in Amherst, but in college communities across Massachusetts.

As Vice President Jay Colbert stated:
“Highlighting staffing shortages is important—but talk alone doesn’t save lives. Real change in law and policy does.”

We cannot afford delay. Thank you to the PFFM for continuing to fight for the changes needed to protect our communities.

From January through March, handled 1,847 emergency calls - an average of 20.4 calls per day.

Nearly half of our medical calls overlapped with another active emergency. At current minimum staffing, that often leaves at least one fire engine understaffed.

That means fewer firefighters responding to fires and other critical incidents - sometimes as few as one.

Increased staffing means safer responses and better outcomes for our community.

Please support Amherst Fire Department by urging your Town Councillors to support increased staffing.

Pictured here is a fire in Leverett, one of 4 mutual aid fires we responded to last weekend.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the firefighter injured at the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy in Stow. We’re thinking of him, his family, and the Chelmsford Fire Department during this time.

Earlier today a Chelmsford firefighter who works part-time at the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy suffered serious injuries after a fall from the Stow campus burn building. He is currently being treated at UMass Memorial Medical Center, where Chelmsford Fire personnel are present to support him and his loved ones. At the specific request of his family, his name is not being released at this time. All of us at Chelmsford FD are holding him in our prayers. We also wish to extend our thanks to the Academy staff and Fire/EMS personnel from Stow, Sudbury, and Life Flight who provided immediate, professional medical care at the scene and in transport.

On Duty crews spent the morning doing in-service training on our new Sterling Rope Stealth Personal Rescue Kits. These kits where purchased via a grant by Lt. Joseph P. DiBernardo Memorial Foundation and Leary Firefighters Foundation. These systems will allow firefighters in immediate life threatening scenarios to safely bail out of a window and belay themselves to safety.

A special thanks to L1764 member Aidan Brooks who put in a significant portion of his own time to researching and applying/securing this grant!

Last Tuesday, Local 1764 swore in 5 new members to our union at once: probationary firefighters Beliveau, Dincer, Richards, Rivera, and Sandoval. Sandoval remains on orientation while the other four have already been assigned to shifts. We welcome all five to the local and look forward to seeing what they accomplish!
