In just a few weeks, we will recognize National Adoption Month, a time to celebrate families formed through adoption, amplify the voices of adoptees, and shine a light on children and youth still waiting for permanency.

As we approach November, we'll be sharing stories, resources, and ways YOU can help make a difference for Iowa children and families.

82 babies. 82 stories of a safe beginning. 🫶

Iowa recently welcomed its 82nd infant safely surrendered under Iowa’s Safe Haven Law. Every safe surrender is a reminder of why awareness matters. Knowing the law and knowing there is a safe, legal option for both the parent and infant can make an incredible difference.

PARENTS & CAREGIVERS--Have you ever wondered, “Why is my child doing this?” Share what you have learned so you can help others.

A child who has lived with trauma may remain on alert even when they are finally safe. They may fight, flee, resist, shut down, control situations, or struggle to trust adults.

Those behaviors can be frustrating.
They can be exhausting.
And sometimes they can be misunderstood as simply being “defiant,” “difficult,” or “bad.”

But behavior is communication.

What looks like defiance may be fear.
What looks like anger may be protection.
What looks like inattention may be hypervigilance.

This doesn't mean there shouldn't be boundaries or accountability.

It means we can hold boundaries while also asking what a child needs underneath the behavior.

💜 Connection, safety, and understanding can be powerful parts of healing.

✨ What a cool story! ✨

A Missouri man adopted as a baby recently learned his biological father is none other than musician, Michael McDonald (The Doobie Brothers).

Another reminder that every adoption story is unique, personal and continues to unfold in its own way. 💜

McDonald, lead vocalist of the Doobie Brothers and a successful solo artist, had Michael Goessling when he was 14-years-old with his middle school sweetheart.
