I was abandoned on June 3, 1979 at 11 a.m. The Star of the Sea Baby Orphanage assumed I was 2 months old. I was abandoned next to the Jung Ju, Incheon City Hall. My Korea adoption agency is Holt Korea and my U.S. adoption agency is Children’s Home Society in Minnesota.

I was adopted at 14 months old to the United States in Iowa. I was adopted by a white American couple who were exceptionally loving and caring. Our family includes two other Korean adoptees, unrelated to me by blood, my older sister and younger brother.

We grew up together in a small Iowa town with a population of about 800 people. Other than myself and my siblings, the residents of our town were mainly white, if not all white.

I am married and we are the parents of four sons. Our home is in Waukee, Iowa.
My birth search began with a free FamilyTreeDNA testing kit offered by a Facebook group for Korean adoptees. The DNA test yielded matches with about 30 distant blood relatives. Besides my boys, these would be the first blood relatives I have ever known. I also DNA tested lots of distant cousins.

Then I tested with 23andMe and Ancestry, both of which revealed the same results until one day I matched with a half sibling. We both grew up 6 hours from each other all our lives. We are so much alike. We talk daily and have become best friends. We believe our mother is currently in Texas but refuses to test. I went to Korea in 2022 with the Korea and Me tour.

Eight of Ruth’s children were victims of child trafficking. In many cases, what they experienced was classified differently by the state at the time, but today, we recognize it as child trafficking.

When a child’s experience is mislabeled or goes unrecognized, it can be difficult for them to feel seen and understood. Children need to feel safe before they can open up, be honest about what they’ve experienced, and get the help and support they need.

At 74 years old, a man was officially adopted by the woman who had welcomed him into her home and considered him her son since he was a child. Despite the challenging circumstances of his upbringing, the love and connection they shared remained strong throughout the years.

It’s a beautiful reminder that the need to feel loved, chosen and truly part of a family doesn’t have an expiration date! Adoption is about belonging, connection and knowing you have a family who chooses you, at any age. What a beautiful gift to know that it’s never too late to find home. 🏠

Norm Adshead is now the legally adopted son of 85-year-old Truro resident Betty Vidito, who says she has considered him family for more than six decades.

Happy Friday! We’re excited and honored to introduce our next featured speaker for the upcoming 𝙁𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙃𝙤𝙥𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙃𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙂𝙖𝙡𝙖: Rep. Brian K. Lohse.

Brian’s connection to adoption is deeply personal. As one of four adopted children himself, he understands the impact adoption can have on children and families. Throughout his career in public service, he has also worked to make adoption more accessible and affordable for Iowa families.
