Our Utah volunteers got a little damp at the Sandy City Farmers Market last weekend! One of our volunteers sent us the rainy photo with the caption "we are now Bailing (water out of our booth) Out Benji" and said that it rained so hard at times that everything got damp.

The cool part though? Our volunteers stuck it out and so did many of the other vendors. All of the vendors ended up supporting and buying stuff from each other to make up for the low public attendance. And, some people stuck out the worst of the rain in their cars then walked through the market when it calmed down.

Sometimes events don't go as planned, but it's always worth it when you make your own connections and fun! Even one new person learning about puppy mills starts a ripple effect that can touch many 🫶

Why do we want people to research before they buy a puppy?

It isn't because we wish everyone would run out and buy puppies-
it is because we know that a lot of people are already buying puppies (like... a lot of people).

If they aren't looking for a rescue pet, then they need a resource to go to in order to make sure they aren't supporting a cruel or inhumane puppy mill. We are that resource.

With the extensive knowledge we have on the industry, families are coming to us every week asking us to check into someone before they exchange any money- and that is how we get animals out of cruel situations. That is taking the power away from businesses and people who thrive off of secrecy and it is taking sales away from them directly.

On this week's episode of "Truth, Lies, and Puppy Mills" we share a look inside of our Field Research program. This small part of what we do often gets the most attention because it is revolutionary. An anti-puppy mill organization getting invitations to see inside of commercial kennels and learn how they operate? Unheard of! But during each visit we have conversations and build relationships that can end animal suffering in big ways and we are excited to be paving this new path-even if others can't quite see the vision yet :)

There are more than 100,000 dog and cat breeders across the country. Less than 5,500 of them are licensed and regulated.

With only 18 states regulating dog breeding, that gap leaves countless companion animals in situations with no standards or expectations for humane care. While not every breeder is a puppy mill- every puppy mill is a breeder.

Bailing Out Benji is a nonprofit that researches breeding operations, sales outlets, and rescue brokers in order to find meaningful strategies that will end puppy mill cruelty. Today, we are re-releasing our updated Licensed Breeder Search Engine: the most comprehensive tool available for looking up licensed breeders nationwide, including their violation history and sales methods. Paired with that, we wanted to visually show the USDA licensed breeders, state licensed breeders, and some of the unlicensed breeders that we have been able to audit. Those are included in the map below.

We believe that when consumers research before they buy, it directly takes funding away from puppy mills- and when lawmakers create meaningful laws like statewide licensing and regulations for companion animal agencies, it leaves less room for cruel operations to exist.

Research. Education. Advocacy.

The truth is that there isn't just one thing that we can do to end puppy mill cruelty, it takes a multi-faceted approach in order to make a difference for the animals who exist within the breeding ecosystem. Not everyone can do everything or even has the skills to, but we can all play a small role in this work in order to make a big difference!

Tomorrow is officially SEPTEMBER and that means it is Puppy Mill Awareness Month! We will be sharing the latest research, educational information, and strategies in order to continue making an impact on those we are able to influence- whether they are consumers, advocates, other organizations, or even breeders.
