Let's look back at the 2025 MLK Celebration and enjoy the kids of Meeker Elementary singing during our program. Vanessa Baker-Latimer always refers to them as "the MLK Children's Choir."

The City of Ames congratulates the three winners of the annual MLK Essay Contest, who were presented with their awards at the MLK Day Celebration held yesterday at City Hall. They are joined on stage by Mayor John Haila and MLK Day committee member Vanessa Baker-Latimer.

Fatimah Naraghi, a senior at Ames High School, received first place and was awarded $500 for the essay titled "Finding My Voice: From Silence to Service."

Mikayla Carpenter, a junior at Roland-Story High School, received second place and was awarded $250 for the essay titled "From Darkness to Light."

Olivia Zhang, a freshman at Ames High School, received third place and was awarded $200 for the essay titled "Always Lend a Helping Hand: How Rev Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Impacted My Life."
