This is to let our Post VFW 674 members know of an important meeting that I have scheduled for 19:00 hours on Monday, April 20th at the Legion. We will be discussing recent donations among other things, as well as the future viability of our Post. So I am hoping we have a good turnout. Our District Commander as well as our Department Compliance Officer will be attending.
I also invited Commander Cliff Barker from the American Legion Post 37 to offer his suggestions as to how our two organizations can work together.
Looking forward to seeing our members at this upcoming, important meeting.

Sincerely,
Richard Morrison
Commander VFW Post 674

Annual VFW “Buddy” Poppy Drive

Earlier this month, (November), our post held its annual VFW “Buddy” Poppy Drive at the Lincoln Center Hy-Vee store in Ames. Despite a number of our VFW members being out-of-town, we still were able to make a good showing and the funds received will go to help some local veterans’ programs. I do want to thank Hy-Vee #2 store manager, J.J. Hesnard for his backing for this event. His team provided the tables and the space to setup for our drive. Really appreciate his support!

We also had great help from the ISU ROTC and I especially want to thank CDT Johnathan Erdmann for his help in getting volunteers to help us with our shifts. They all were great to work with!

Here are a couple of photos from our event:

Great news from the Iowa Society, Sons of the American Revolution

As our country makes plans to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution the Iowa Society, Sons of the American Revolution have announced a unique kick-off event.

At 1:00 PM on Saturday, October 4th, 2025, at the Revolutionary War Monument on the State of Iowa Capitol Grounds that is south of the Iowa State Capital the public is invited to join in a recognition of the 41st name being added to the monument.

Matrom Elmore, 1757-1840 was a native of Virginia who volunteered and served no less than 4 times between 1779 and 1782 in both Virginia and Kentucky. He moved to the Iowa Territory and appeared in the 1840 census six years before Iowa Statehood. Mr. Elmore was also said to have been the first regular Baptist preacher of the Lee County neighborhood in the late 1830’s.

Recent research, documentation, and approval by the Veteran’s Administration and the Iowa Department of Administrative Services led to the engraving of the name of this veteran who joins the 40 other documented veterans previously listed.

Descendants of Elmore and other listed veterans still reside in Iowa and will join with Color Guards from all military eras as well as representatives of other historic, patriotic, civic, and educational organizations.
—————-
An interesting note is that my relative, Benjamin Bell, is engraved on this monument! I am including my photo of this monument showing my relative’s name. This same monument is where Matrom Elmore’s name will be engraved as mentioned above. Also, including my photo of Benjamin’s grave in a cemetery not far outside of Stratford, IA. Benjamin lived to be 102 years old!
