This transport company regularly brings puppies to stores here in Idaho!

Thousands of animal transports happen each week across the country. Puppies going to pet stores. Companion animals moving between sheltering and rescue organizations. There is no shortage of animal movement occurring in the US. But did you know that this is a fairly unregulated part of the world?

On the commercial scale, for example, people and companies that move puppies for breeders and brokers are not required to be licensed and inspected- which is honestly so surprising! Instead, these places must 'register' with the USDA and inspections can happen if there is a reason to do so. Some of those reasons might include having a complaint filed, having ties to another problematic facility, or spotting red flags with paperwork.

While doing our routine audit of inspection records and official warnings, we learned that the transport company Subject Enterprise received a critical violation and a USDA warning after a puppy died in their care during transit. Based on records that we received from the Iowa Department of Agriculture, we know that this puppy was traveling from the dog broker JAKS puppies to the pet store Puppyland in Puyallup, WA. As you can read, the transporter was unable to provide any notes or documentation showing that they provided emergency care to the puppy, nor did they stop to find a veterinarian along the way that could help.

This case is a horrific example of why there needs to be more oversight on puppy transport companies and more accountability for these businesses to hire and train staff that know how to take care of the animals they are in charge of. With dozens to hundreds of puppies in each van from various different breeding facilities, this could be a breeding ground for disease and neglect if those transporters aren't able or willing to provide care.

The store owners of Puppland were ordered to pay $3.75 million dollars after an Attorney General Investigation in Washington State!

Breaking news!!

The owners of the Puppyland chain of stores were ordered to pay $3.75 million to the state of Washington and end its "illegal advertising and sales practices".

This comes after the Washington State Attorney General's office was prompted to investigate the store following numerous complaints from customers. Our nonprofit was instrumental in helping customers come forward in this case and we are extremely grateful for this outcome!

The court order also requires Puppyland Washington to make numerous reforms to its sales and advertising practices. Among them:

- Puppyland can no longer require non-disparagement provisions in its sales contracts;

- Puppyland cannot refuse to negotiate with consumers on pet costs;

- Puppyland is prohibited from advising consumers on loans;

- Puppyland employees cannot falsely advertise breeding standards; and

- Puppyland must clearly advertise the price range of its puppies.

This ruling only affects their Washington location. This chain currently has locations in Texas, Arizona, and Idaho.

We could end puppy mills tomorrow if members of the public would do just two things.

1. Research before you buy a puppy, kitten, or any other animal- and then- not hand your money over to people or companies that have a history of poor animal care.

2. Adopt from your local rescue, shelter or national breed club! Adoption agencies across the country are bursting at the seams with amazing dogs of all breeds that are looking for a family to call their own.

Unfortunately, we aren't quite there yet as a society but people are learning and are being more ethical consumers when it comes to pet acquisition. Some might have to learn that puppy mill lesson the hard way (like our founder), but so many families are researching and waiting to find a breeder that they are comfortable with or they are adopting. Any time we can stop someone before they support an inhumane facility is a huge win in our book!

Today is the beginning of Puppy Mill Awareness Month and we will be sharing some puppy mill news and facts all month long. Our team is great at doing the research, but we need all of you to continue helping us educate about what puppy mills are and how to avoid them! So if you are seeing this, please interact! Share our posts, ask your friends to follow our nonprofit, or maybe even join an event that is local to you. Anything you can do to help spark conversations in your community about puppy mills will move mountains to help the dogs that are still trapped.

And if you know of anyone looking to buy a puppy, send them our way first! We are happy to share with them anything that we know in order to prevent a puppy mill sale.

Puppyland, which has a location in Meridian, is being sued by the Washington State Attorney General for misleading customers and locking them into predatory finance loans.

BREAKING NEWS:

The Washington State Attorney General has just announced a lawsuit against the Puppyland chain of puppy stores.

Attorney General Bob Ferguson announced today he filed a lawsuit against Puppyland and its owners for failing to honor advertised health guarantees and channeling customers into predatory loans with illegal terms restricting truthful reviews.

The lawsuit asserts Puppyland misrepresented both the breeding standards of puppies it sold and the health guarantees they offered, while unfairly maneuvering buyers into signing predatory loans with interest rates approaching 200% without adequate time to understand the terms.

As you know, Bailing Out Benji has been crucial in helping customers file complaints when they've purchased sick puppies from pet stores- including Puppyland.

Puppy-buying season is here đź’”

Don’t put cruelty on your shopping list! The public is funding the puppy mill industry every time they buy a puppy without meeting the parents. In order to avoid this cruel industry, make sure you research BEFORE you add a new pet to your home, and don’t forget to look at your local shelter or rescue for your next best friend.

What does feeding time look like at your house? Twice a day? Healthy, measured food in a clean bowl?

This is feeding time in a puppy mill. A week's worth of food is put in this red box and is expected to last. Puppy mill owners will do anything to limit how much time they have to actually spend with the dogs in their “care”.

This is what the public supports when they buy a puppy from a pet store or a click-and-ship website.

Pet stores don’t admit to using puppy mills- it’s bad for business!

So we took the time to research over 350 pet stores in the US (so far) and connect them to the puppy mills they use and make it public.

200% interest per puppy.

No. We aren’t exaggerating. Puppy selling stores use lending companies like EasyPay , WAGS lending and Lending USA which charge upwards of 200% interest per lease or loan in order to buy an already overpriced puppy.

It gets worse. In states where there are no legal protections, your puppy can actually be repossessed upon missed payment. And you are still on the hook for the loan or lease even if your puppy gets sick or dies.

The USDA will do anything to protect puppy mills. Not only did they take away the public’s right to see public inspection reports on these facilities before they buy, but they also allow puppy mills to change license numbers to hide from previous violations.

Who does this secrecy protect? The consumer? The dogs? No... It protects the puppy mills.

The USDA says that within breeding facilities, the cages dogs live in only need to be six inches wider and taller than their body. So long as the dog can stand up, turn around and lay down it is considered adequate space.

What do you think? Is that enough space for a dog to live happily it’s entire life?

It is according to the puppy mill industry that you are supporting when you buy a dog from a pet store or from a newspaper or website without meeting it’s parents!

Do your research, visit the facility and always reach out to us with any questions! Or better yet- Opt to Adopt
