Travel Sparq's Costa Rica: Culture and Conservation Program requires students to attend mandatory pre- (and post) trip classes, but what even happens in these classes?

* We start class with dinner and an intro game as we settle in for the session. Each dinner comes from a different restaurant around Ames.
* Next, we cover housekeeping items such as packing, expectations, and safety, since these often raise important questions from students.
* Then we get into the main topic: culture and conservation. This aims to get students excited and build a base of knowledge before experiencing the land of waterfalls!
* After that, we finish class with questions, card games, and other team-building activities.
* We will also have a new addition this year: the Adventure Race! Our 4th class period will feature students competing as a group against the chaperones for epic prizes! This is designed to get students working together, communicating, recalling information from previous classes, and having fun!

The point of these classes is not to overwhelm students with a mass of information at once, but to build connections and ideas before going to Costa Rica. We also aim to ease anxiety before the trip and help them feel more comfortable with their other group members and chaperones. 🌴🌊☀️

Travel Sparq wants to ensure we have a safe, fun, and authentic experience. We’re really picky about the tour operators we use. We’re not just looking for TripAdvisor reviews; we want real people’s recommendations!

Our first excursion is to Alma 5 Farm, a family-owned fruit farm known for its local, sustainable farming practices. After exploring the farm, students will tour a coffee mill and see native wildlife. Our tour guide, recommended by Iowa State CALS study abroad, is highly praised for connecting students with the local community.

After a week with the sea turtles, students will take a night hike in Cahuita National Park led by ATEC, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving the Talamanca area's way of life.

Next, students will join ATEC staff on a visit to the Bribri Tribe to learn about their culture, observe chocolate-making, discover medicinal plants, and relax at a waterfall.

Students will tour the Jaguar Rescue Center to learn how the organization rehabilitates native wildlife, focusing on ethical animal care.

For the Caribbean Cooking Class, Josefina welcomes us into her home to help prepare a local menu and share her knowledge of Puerto Viejo.

When planning excursions, we prioritize local groups focused on sustainability and conservation.

Helping sea turtles is going to take up 8 days of our students' time in Costa Rica, but we've made sure it's not allllll work! We’ve planned a range of tours and excursions for students, including farm tours, hikes, a cooking class, a visit to a BriBri community, a tour of the Jaguar Rescue Center, and maybe a few bonus excursions!

They will also have time to explore San José, Costa Rica’s capital city, on foot, chill on Caribbean beaches, and do a little shopping. Students won’t be bored as they experience everything Costa Rica has to offer. July will be here before we know it! Which excursion would you want to do?

Costa Rica’s cuisine options can cater to anyone, whether a student has particular dietary needs, is a picky eater, or wants to try it all; no one will go hungry!

Rincón de la Vieja National Park: Aries ♈️
Aries are known to be energetic with a....... fiery side. And Rincón de la Vieja NP is known for its active volcano (last eruption was 2017), geothermal hot springs, and bubbling mud pots! This park has a fiery side, too!

Los Quetzales National Park: Ta**us ♉️
As an Earth sign, Ta**us is known to be reliable, practical, but also a lover of luxurious things! Well, this park is primarily a refuge (practical) for an iconic species: the Resplendent Quetzal! With its aqua and red feathers and a flowing tail that trails behind it as it swoops through the forest canopy, we bet you can't find a more luxurious-looking bird! (But we'd still really enjoy it if you tried.)

Manuel Antonio National Park: Gemini ♊️
Gemini's are a lot of things: witty, curious, adaptable, social, charismatic- and all of that is contained within a Gemini thanks to their dual nature! Well, Manuel Antonio is a complete dichotomy of lush rainforest and tropical beaches, popular and highly accessible. As the most popular national park in Costa Rica, it has something for everyone- like a Gemini!

Tortuguero National Park: Cancer ♋️
Cancers are known to be sensitive, nurturing, and protective, which sounds like Tortuguero to us! This park is primarily a turtle nesting sanctuary, with a strong conservation focus. Of course, it would be a Cancer, protecting those who need protecting (like sea turtle hatchlings)!

Corcovado National Park: Leo ♌️
It's just like a Leo to want the spotlight, and Corcovado steals it not only for its breathtaking beauty but also because National Geographic named it the world's highest biodiversity hotspot! Is it a showstopper like a Leo? Heck yeah it is!

Santa Rosa National Park: Virgo ♍️
When we think of "Virgo," we think of someone practical, detail-oriented, and having exceptional spatial awareness. Virgos can solve any problem you throw at them. And wouldn't you know, Santa Rosa National Park is a well-planned park that is the largest expanse of preserved (and restored) tropical dry forest in Mesoamerica! Once almost completely devastated by clear-cutting for cattle ranches, it's making a huge comeback. It takes a lot of detailed thought and hard work to preserve one of the most critically endangered ecosystems in the world- and only a Virgo could do it right! (But they know that.)

Cahuita National Park: Libra ♎️
Cahuita exudes "Libra" energy because of its diplomatic and social administration! This park is unique because community management, rather than the government, mostly maintains it! Libras also hate being alone, and this park is always teeming with tourists and wildlife alike! It's easy to be charmed by this Caribbean oasis, just like it's easy to be charmed by a Libra!

Marino Ballena National Park: Scorpio ♏️
Scorpios are known to be intense, passionate, insightful, and have eyes that look into your soul. And the perfect park for a Scorpio is Marino Ballena! It is primarily a humpback whale sanctuary and protects the largest coral reef on the Pacific side of Central America! If that ain't intense, we don't know what is! To focus on all of that marine biodiversity preservation takes someone who can handle the heat, and stare right back at it- to save the whales!

Arenal Volcano National Park: Sagittarius ♐️
Sagittariuses are known as many things, but one description rises above all others: Adventurer! And Arenal Volcano is THE adventure park! People travel here to zipline, hike a volcano, go canyoneering, or ride the river on a white-water rafting trip. This place is a Sagittarius' dream! This free-spirited sign can relax in one of the hot springs or watch for wildlife after an adrenaline rush, because life is one big adventure, so they might as well do it all!

Cocos Island National Park: Capricorn ♑️
Many Capricorns have a hard, protective outer shell with a gooey inside. As far as national parks go, Cocos Island is "that" park. It will require you to work to reach its isolated location, which is a 30-hr boat ride away. But once you arrive, the beauty is unreal with numerous waterfalls, lush rainforest, and unmatched marine life like hammerhead sharks and rays! This park is often compared to the Galapagos Islands for its biodiversity, and it is another remote yet rewarding park to visit. So don't forget to take time to connect with your favorite Capricorn, because there's so much there to discover!

Barra Honda National Park: Aquarius ♒️
Aquariuses (Aquarians??) are visionaries who are highly intellectual and can be pretty esoteric. They don't rely on feelings; they rely on concepts. And Barra Honda NP features unique geology, underground caverns, and prehistoric coral reef platforms. Not everyone will want to explore this subterranean wonder, but original thinkers will be able to get over their fear (and claustrophobia) and appreciate this bewitching park!

Tenorio National Park: Pisces ♓️
Pisces are prone to fantasy, romanticism, and can be a little sensitive. Within Tenorio NP sits the magical-looking Rio Celeste. The bright turquoise water is the result of a chemical reaction at the "Teñidero," where two colorless rivers merge and create its otherworldly hue. But this park has some pretty specific restrictions because, like a Pisces, this ecosystem is quite sensitive and deserves to be respected and admired, like a Pisces!
Which one do you want to visit first?!

What does student supervision look like while we're in Costa Rica? Well, that depends on the situation. If we are on excursions, traveling, or having meals, we do them as a group! Students are not on excursions by themselves; a chaperone is always with them.

The conservation is a different situation as it's 8 days with a lot of free time and a good dose of turtle work! Because of this, we set rules that we expect students to follow, and chaperones routinely check in with them. We also eat meals as a group, so it's a great check-in opportunity.

When we're in Puerto Viejo and have free time, we have multiple guardrails in place to ensure student safety. In pre-trip classes and in the week at the conservation, chaperones will get a better idea of each student's maturity level, who might require more supervision, and who doesn't. When chaperones determine it's safe for students to explore unsupervised, they must use a buddy system, have structured check-ins, limit exploration to specific areas during specific times, and keep their phones with them. Wi-Fi is readily available in Puerto Viejo, and the class will use a shared communication channel on WhatsApp so we can communicate as needed.

Having the freedom to explore allows students to experience independence, which is vital for increasing their self-confidence! They are never expected to handle any logistics or travel- Jen takes care of all of that so they can just soak up the "pura vida" vibes! Lastly, we intentionally schedule downtime for students to unwind, relax, and absorb their experiences, because not everyone likes to be as "on-the-go" as Jen!
