Field Day 2026 is almost here!

The Story County Amateur Radio Club will join with the Boone Area Radio Klub (BARK), C**n Valley Amateur Radio Club (CVARC), and Hiawatha Amateur Radio Club (HARC) for Field Day on Saturday, June 27, and Sunday, June 28, 2026. Field Day is a 24 hour amateur radio event sponsored by the American Radio Relay League. The clubs will be operating from the Carl “Fritz” Henning Shelter off Lower Ledges Road at Ledges State Park..

The Story County Amateur Radio Club will meet on Thursday, June 04, at 7:00 PM. Sebastián Delmont, KI2D, the software developer behind the Ham2K Portable Logger (PoLo), will be joining us online to give the presentation, "Ham2K Portable Logger, or how to be happy logging on your phone." Sebastián's presentation will be an overview of portable operations, like POTA, SOTA, etc., along with why you should consider using your phone or tablet to log them, along with a demo of Ham2K PoLo portable logging features. The Story County Amateur Radio Club will meet on Thursday, May 07, at 7:00 PM. at Rundall, NØHR, will present "Radio from the Wrong Side of the Road: POTA Tips, Trips and Adventures From Across the Pond."

Pat will discuss aspects of his recent POTA operation in England including planning/preparation, flying with radio gear, license considerations, and operating from across the pond.

The Story County Amateur Radio Club will meet on Thursday, April 02, at 7:00 PM. Bill Boswell, WI0JK, will present “From Driveway EME to VME and Interstellar Communications” to provide an update on his small-station Earth-Moon-Earth (EME) efforts, highlighting new experiences operating on 23 cm from his backyard and driveway setups. He will also share practical insights into weak-signal techniques, station optimization, and what today’s amateurs can achieve with limited space and power. The talk will then zoom out to the scale of deep space communications, highlighting recent Amateur Radio experiments with Venus and how NASA uses its Deep Space Network to reach interstellar space.

The Story County Amateur Radio Club will hold its fall "SCARC in the Park" event - featuring the Parks On The Air (POTA) program - on Saturday October 25th in Ledges State Park (POTA entity US-2303). We will set up around 07:00 (am) in the Carl "Fritz" Henning shelter in the Lower Ledges area and will operate continuously until about 18:00.

The Story County Amateur Radio Club will meet on Thursday, October 2, at 7:00 PM with an in-person gathering at the Ames Airport, in the Main Terminal large classroom. In WI0JK on the Moon, Bill Boswell will share how he built a small Earth-Moon-Earth station that successfully bounced signals off the Moon using just 75 watts, a Yagi on a tripod, and weak-signal software. From early radio tinkering to a driveway moonbounce contact 460,000 miles round trip, this project blends technical challenge with the wonder that keeps amateur radio alive.

Due to a scheduling issue, we are moving the October SCARC meeting to the Ames Airport, Main Terminal, large classroom. Parking will be right in front of the main terminal building. Club members will be on hand to diret traffic.
