Campbell Chapel AME, serving Americus' oldest Black congregation since 1920, is a Romanesque Revival church with Queen Anne elements, designed by Georgia’s first registered African American architect, Louis H. Persley. The church has been a hub for worship, education, and political meetings, and hosted graduation exercises for local African American students from 1957-1969. Listed on the Georgia Trust’s Places in Peril in 2009, the church faced severe structural issues, including twisting trusses, rotting windows, and a collapsed ceiling due to moisture damage and deteriorated mortar. In 2008, the 700-pound bell fell to the ground floor after its rotted ceiling supports gave way. In 2024, the church received a $750,000 African American Civil Rights grant from the National Park Service to support its preservation.
