Thousands of combat-injured veterans are still waiting on Congress to fix an injustice that never should have existed.

More than 54,000 veterans were medically retired because of combat or combat-related injuries before reaching 20 years of service. Instead of receiving the full benefits they earned, their military retirement pay is reduced dollar-for-dollar by their VA disability compensation—a policy often called the “wounded veteran tax.”

Military retirement pay recognizes honorable service. VA disability compensation addresses lifelong injuries. These benefits serve different purposes, and veterans who sacrificed in war deserve both.

The Major Richard Star Act (H.R. 2102 / S. 1032) would finally correct this unfair policy and deliver long-overdue justice to some of our most severely injured veterans.
