Would You Make a Good Harmonist? 🍇🌾

Harvest season has arrived, and everyone in the community has a job to do.

🍇 Spend the day picking grapes in the vineyards.
🌽 Gather fruits and vegetables before the weather changes.
🫙 Preserve food for the months ahead.
🤝 Work alongside your neighbors to make sure everyone is provided for.

For the Harmonists, harvest wasn't just about gathering crops—it was about working together. Every person played a role in helping the community thrive, and the success of the season depended on teamwork, dedication, and a lot of hard work.

So, what do you think?

Could you keep up with harvest season at Old Economy Village, or would you be counting down to dinner? Let us know in the comments! 👇

Hidden Corners of Old Economy Village 🐝🍯

Did you know one of the Village's sweetest hidden gems is its bee hives?

Tucked among the gardens, these busy pollinators play an important role in supporting the flowers, herbs, fruits, and vegetables that thrive throughout Old Economy Village. While today's hives help maintain the landscape, beekeeping has long been connected to self-sufficient communities like the Harmonists, who valued every resource the land had to offer.

Next time you visit, take a moment to see if you can spot the hives. You might just catch the bees hard at work—and discover another fascinating corner of the Village along the way.

Saturday, September 19th, come out to Old Economy Village for our Roots of Community: Garden Day! From 10am to 4pm, enjoy activities like a demonstration on Farmer Shawn’s “Worm Farm” composting!

Farmer Shawn has been working in the urban farming sector for the past two decades. Originally from Brooklyn, Shawn moved to South Philly in 2020, and since then, has worked for multiple urban farms in the North, Southwest, and Northeast, where he’s done everything from creating compost systems to implementing no till growing systems and regenerative practices, along with managing different farmers’ markets around the city and helping to build new community gardens in South Philly.

He is currently on the board of PASA Sustainable Agriculture, and is the Philadelphia Advisor for the Agricultural Conservation Assistance Program (ACAP). You can find him slinging veggies at the Point Breeze Community Market, getting his hands dirty in his backyard garden, or tearing it up at a punk rock show.

Bring the whole family for a day of exploration, learning, and hands-on discovery! We have so many more activities for both kids and adults alike. Experience the joy of gardening while learning how caring for the land has strengthened communities across generations.
