Sorry we've been quiet Kanda Family, we're still here πŸ‘‹πŸΌ

Quite honestly this week has taken a big toll on me. Moz being hospitalized again has just been very tough. Im sure that sounds silly to many. But spending over a year fighting for her life was tough and heavy. I didnt expect this week to bring up so many emotions. And not being able to visit her at the hospital has made it even harder.

On top of that, its been impossibly hot and humid, culminating in really intense storms last night and losing power for 16 hours last night.

We're working our booties off to keep everyone safe and comfortable and cool. But social media has fallen to the back burner. So I just wanted to let yall know we're hanging in here πŸ’œ

If youre seeing this post...can you say hi to Moz?? πŸ‘‹πŸΌ

Our reach has been dramatically low since we started talking about Moz's emergency and asking for help 😭

And that drop has really hurt our ability to help Moz. If no one sees our posts, no one can help us help Moz. So drop a hiiiiii and some love for Mozzy. And maybe throw in a little help with her emergency if you can too πŸ™πŸΌ

We also have good news to share!

Moz did well during surgery & by late afternoon she had recovered enough to walk back to her stall!!

Her surgeon shared that they were able to easily remove the metal and found a pretty big abscess. They were able to drain and probe it, and the probe showed that the abscess isnt into any bone!! All great news!!

Moz had another round of antibiotics & they bandaged her foot & put a block to help take pressure off that part. They're hoping it drains well now that its opened up & will change her bandage ina few days & see how shes doing. We are hopeful that maybe she will be good to come home then πŸ™πŸΌπŸ€žπŸΌ

I took this photo just before she went to the hospital. And I cant wait to have her back home again soon 😭

The good news?

Moz cooperated & they were able to get the radiographs without sedation this morning!!!!

The bad news?

Rads showed a tiny metal sliver in Moz's hoof along with another concerning spot. So Moz is heading into surgery right now to have the sliver removed and to get a good look/cleaning into the other spot.

Im obviously a nervous wreck. Moz is both a delicate angel and a strong ass woman. I know she can do this. My main fear is the anesthesia, as it is always scary with pigs and Moz has a history of struggling with recovery. But because of extensive medical history, her anesthesiologists already know the best procedures and medical combinations for her. We are so lucky Moz is in the best hands possible at Purdue πŸ’œ

The other major stress is that Moz's estimate is now $2500 😭 This is a HUGE expense for our little sanctuary and we really need your help now more than ever to take care of Moz. Donations and engagement are desperately needed to help her get through this πŸ™

First picture was taken Monday night here at Kanda, second is the rads her vets sent me showing the metal sliver in her foot.

If you havent been with us long you might not know Moz's complex medical history. Sweet Moz had a medical emergency in December of 2023 followed by severe complications for over a year. Moz was in at the hospital more often than not and there were countless time we thought she wasnt going to make it. But her incredible vets fought just as hard as she did and despite all odds, Mozzy survived!! We actually recently celebrated her 1 year anniversary of being outside again.

Through it all, Moz was her happy-go-lucky self, all things considered. Most beings, humans and non-humans, who go through such intense medical trauma experience PTSD, especially if & when they have to go back to the hospital. I experienced extreme guilt and fear having to load Moz up and take her in again.

But in true Moz fashion, she jumped right into the trailer to go into Purdue. She unloaded just as easily, walked straight to the scale, and strutted down the hallways to her stall like she owned the place. After getting her checked in I went back to say goodbye and she greeted me with hot pants, like she had to comfort me and tell me shes ok. The reminder I needed to be strong like Moz πŸ₯Ή

Today her veterinary team is going to attempt to get radiographs without sedating her. She has been very cooperative with her vets, but when they tried yesterday, she was afraid of the equipment and jumped up. If they cant get it awake, they will have to sedate her. Which is extra scary because historically Moz does not handle sedation or anesthesia well. Im so grateful her vets are being so patient with her and trying to get these images without sedation. I hope she decides to cooperate today 🀞🏼

Please send Moz & her vets a lot of love and calm energy πŸ™

Moz's estimate has also gone up to $1000 😬 So far we have raised 155 for this emergency. I know times are difficult but if everyone could throw in just $5 each AND share, we could have her estimate covered. But we need our Kanda Family's help. For Mozzy.

πŸ₯ Mozzy Needs Your Help πŸ₯

Late last week our sweet Moz started limping and I found two rocks embedded in the pad of her foot and infection setting in. We got to work right away to treat Moz & control her pain.

Unfortunately yesterday it was apparent that Moz needed more intense care than we could give her here at home. Infections can turn very dangerous fast so off to Purdue Large Animal Hospital we went.

Moz has a long, difficult medical history including struggles with infection and anesthesia. So after much discussion, her amazing vets are going to start aggressive treatments first before imaging. If she doesnt improve soon, we will have to go to imaging and potentially surgery. We are so hopeful that isnt the case.

Please send Moz all the love you can. We also need help with her quickly rising vet bills. We didnt wait to fundraise before getting her the help she needs, but now she needs your help to continue to fight this πŸ™πŸ’œ

πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ Happy Pride Month!! πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

Pride is a riot. Pride is a celebration. Pride is a loud, booming voice. Pride is a quiet whisper. Pride says you are loved for who you are, at your truest self. Pride is for those who have always known their identity, those who are "late bloomers", & those still figuring it out.

In a country where far too many are actively working on silencing the LGBTQIA+ community, it's honestly hard to feel like celebrating. From the companies and people who participate in performative activism to those who refuse to respect those who are "different" than them. To those who are actively trying to pass laws to silence the q***r communities to those engaging in actual violence. Our community is hurting.

Mixed in with the celebrations we cannot forget to keep fighting. We are in this together and we MUST continue to fight, especially for our Trans community who is hurting extra hard. We have to continue to speak out and seek justice. From micro aggressions to bans and unjust laws. Speak up!

We have to remember that Pride is more than just a celebration. That allyship is more than waving a rainbow flag. That we are not free until we are all free.

Happy Pride, friends! Let us never forget to make this world a better place for everyone living here, human & non human, not just this month but always 🌈

Im so heartbroken to share that our Little Pete passed away last night πŸ’”

He was his normal, silly self when we fed dinner last night. But when we went to shut everyone up for the night, he had passed. Little Pete was an old man, at least 8 years old, and I can only hope he wasnt in pain as his sweet soul left his beautiful body.

Little Pete was rescued from a horrific event in February in Ridgeland WI called Pioneer Days. The town would collect unwanted chickens for days before and leave them outside in the brutal cold until the event. Then theyd throw the chickens off a roof into a drunken crowd 😭

Our amazing friends Farm Bird Sanctuary organized and did everything in their power to stop the toss while simultaneously rescuing everyone they could. We were able to take in quite a few of the survivors over the years, including Little Pete and his bestie Max. Little Pete was our last remaining survivor.

Despite the unimaginable neglect and abuse Little Pete survived, he was always the sweetest boy. Little Pete exude confidence and he had quite the playful side. He loved all his brothers and he REALLY loved treats. He'd get so excited, hed peck at my hands because I could never be quick enough.

I miss you so much already, sweet boy. I hope your reunion with Max is beautiful πŸ’”β€οΈ

Imagine a world where both dogs and pigs are safe & loved.

Imagine a world where humans are free to exist as their authentic selves.

Imagine a world that values life and the planet more than money and profits.

Each and every one of us has the ability to decide what is actually important. And we have an obligation to match our actions to those values.

Every single choice you make is a "vote" for your values. Your time, your money, your energy are valuable. Spend them wisely and never doubt your own power to make change happen. But we have to realize that power and use it to change our trajectory, before its too late.

A better world is possible, for everyone πŸ’œβœŒπŸΌπŸŒ±

Last week I saw a post in a rescue group asking for rescues to pull dogs set for euthanasia. Im only in these groups for when shelters find pigs, but something about these beautiful little pleading eyes just pulled me in.

Kia, now Mia, had been at the shelter for almost a year, most of her life. She was found a stray and never claimed. And like many dogs, shelter life was extremely hard on Mia. But unlike most dogs, Mia could climb and shimmy out of her kennel space. Which meant she had to live in a pop-up crate for hers, and everyones, safety.

Despite being the sweetest dog ever, Mia's athletic abilities and special flight needs made potential adopters skip over her. With limited space in the shelter and living in a crate long term, she ended up on the euthanasia list πŸ’”

We have been wanting to find a companion for our dog, Charlie, for some time. But finding a dog who can fit into a pig sanctuary isn't easy, especially with 4 pigs living in our house. But after talking in depth with the shelter, Mia just felt like the perfect fit for all of us.

I wish I had a video of Mia's face when she jumped out of the truck and saw a pig for the first time. She was eagerly greeted by Clayton (through a fence of course) and her eyes got HUGE as she slowly backed away πŸ˜… Mia quickly learned to ignore the pigs, which is exactly what we want!

It has been quite an adjustment for everyone. Charlie was displaying some only child syndrome behaviors (lol) and honestly its taken her more time to adjust than Mia. But as Im writing this theyre laying on the couch near each other. I know theyll be the best of friends in no time!! πŸ₯Ή

Please join us in welcoming Mia to Kanda! And remember, adopt dont shop isn't just a cute slogan. Breeding, selling, purchasing animals, and not getting them spayed & neutered is the direct cause of overpopulation. Adopting saves multiple lives, the one you adopt and the ones who fill that space you opened up. Support rescues. Adopt dont shop πŸ’œ

Just like Charlie, Mia is not a Kanda resident, meaning no Kanda funds go towards her care. But she is the newest member of our Kanda Family and we just had to introduce her to yall!
