NMC teaching artists are working with the The Women's Center to create lullabies! Please join us on Thursday, July 2 at 6:00 pm, at the Ore Dock Community Room for a fund raiser concert for the Women's Center. The Ore Dock is located at 14 W. Spring Street, Marquette, Michigan. All are welcome!

The Lullaby Project, in collaboration with Carnegie Hall, pairs parents and caregivers with professional musicians and writers to compose and sing lullabies for their children. Each song amplifies love, connection and healing. This is a powerful experience and the culminating performances that result from the work are amazing. The Teal Lake Singers be joining us, along with Evan Premo, Rebecca Fishman and Bette and Dean Premo.

Thanks go to Michigan Arts and Culture Council, National Endowment for the Arts, The Women's Center, Community Foundation of Marquette County and the Ore Dock Brewery for their contributions toward this project. https://www.facebook.com/search/top?q=carnegie%20hall%20lullaby%20project

Twenty-eight 4th grade students and nineteen 5th grade students at Baraga Schools made their own flutes and learned how to play them with Michael LaughingFox Charette and Evan Premo. The students glued, sanded and calibrated their flutes and then learned how to make sounds they knew like water, birds, fire, wind, waves, Mourning Dove, dog trill and wolf howl. They then presented to over 200 elementary students, staff and parents and learned the stories of the creation of the flute, the squirrel, the rain bird, smart berries and the spirit traveler. Thanks go to Christine Awonohopay (Assistant Director of Culture and Language at Baraga County Promise Neighborhoods), Dawn Vanlerberghe (5th grade teacher), Shari Pizziola (4th grade teacher), Principal Christina Gallup, LA Phil YOLA program, Michigan Arts and Culture Council, and National Endowment for the Arts for this amazing and fun program organized by Northwoods Music Collaborative.

We had a magical Saturday evening playing music with Kuparikielet for the dance at the Finnish American Heritage Center. These young people showed lots of poise and confidence and demonstrated their musical strength. We also thank all the dancers and listeners that showed up between major snowstorms!

We’re just a week away from our Soup Bowl Fundraiser at the Finnish American Folk School! We won’t just be filling our own bowls – we’re aiming to help fill our neighbors’ bowls at the same time.

Please bring along shelf stable foods for a group donation to Hancock’s St. Vincent de Paul food pantry. Their volunteers tell us some of the top food items they need include peanut butter, jam, pasta, pasta sauce, canned fruit including cranberries, canned or box soups, tuna, instant box potatoes, stuffing mix, and onion powder. Paper and personal hygiene products are also in high demand.

Northwoods Music Collaborative is sponsoring music by Carrie Dlutkowski during the Soup Bowl Fundraiser. Fiddler and step dancer Carrie Dlutkowski enjoys sharing her music, which draws on a wide range of styles and influences, from Canadian and American, to Scottish and swing. She explores the roots of traditional music, while also using it as a foundation for branching out into new creative territory. Carrie is a step dancer in the Ottawa Valley style. This exciting form of percussive dance, originating in the Ottawa Valley region of Ontario, has roots in Scottish, Irish, tap, and other dance forms.

Soup's on! Mark your calendars and bring a friend. Enjoy a delicious bowl of hot soup donated by Hancock businesses, take home your very own handmade bowl, and support the Folk School at the same time.
