Diabetes Foundation of the High Plains Improving the lives of High Plains children and adults with diabetes through education, research, and social support.

Founded in August of 2014, the Diabetes Foundation of the High Plains grew from the passionate support of Will Rogers Range Riders and Texas Panhandle families affected by Type 1 diabetes. The Foundation is the realization of the career-long dreams of Dr. Alison Lunsford and Sue Rankin to love, support, and meet the needs of local children suffering from diabetes.

ISLET CELL TRANSPLANT:

Currently available only through clinical trials to a lucky few because islet cells are considered a drug instead of what they are, cells from a deceased donor’s pancreas.

‼️Help us ask HHS to reclassify islet cells‼️

The FDA is requesting comments about the proposal to reclassify donor islet cells as an organ rather than a drug

If you have one minute to spare, please visit regulations.gov/commenton/FDA-2026-N-10738-0001

Comment:
“I am commenting in support of reclassifying islet cells from an FDA-regulated drug to an organ. This reclassification would increase patient access for people living with Type 1 Diabetes, improve affordability, and push forward important research for cures and functional cures for Type 1 Diabetes. Islet cells are not a drug and should not be classified as such. Please reclassify them as what they are, an organ, and give hope to the millions of people living with Type 1 Diabetes. Thank you!”

What if treating Type 1 diabetes could mean replacing the cells that make insulin?
That is the science behind islet cell transplantation, and on September 19, we are bringing one of the physicians doing this work to Amarillo.

Dr. Piotr Witkowski leads pancreatic islet transplantation at UChicago Medicine, where researchers are studying ways to transplant insulin-producing cells into people with difficult-to-control Type 1 diabetes.

Join the Diabetes Foundation of the High Plains for brunch and a conversation about how this works, who may qualify, what researchers are learning, and where the science could lead.

Saturday, September 19 | 10 a.m.
Amarillo National Bank, Skyline Room

There is no charge to attend, but registration is required.
