For the first time in Wild West Wildlife Rehabilitation Center history, we are hiring!

Every year, the number of injured, orphaned, and displaced wild animals coming through our doors continues to grow. Thanks to the incredible support of our community, we have reached a point where we need additional help to continue providing the best care possible.

These are seasonal summer positions that could lead to additional opportunities if funding allows.

• Providing excellent customer service and representing WWWRC professionally

This position serves as one of the first points of contact for many people seeking help with wildlife situations.
Responsibilities include:
• Answering and coordinating wildlife-related phone calls

Jean-Clawed the badger baby is getting SO much bigger!

When he's out of his playpen exploring and running around, Stephanie's feet are definitely not safe. Because Jean-Clawed is blind so he likes to stay right beside her wherever she goes. Unfortunately for Stephanie, that means her feet have become his favorite chew toys, climbing structures, and general sources of entertainment.

It's actually pretty sweet to watch how much he relies on her to help navigate his surroundings, even if her toes occasionally pay the price.

And yes, before the comments start... Stephanie knows she has fingers for toes, so let's just get that out of the way now. 😂

Jean-Clawed may be getting bigger every day, but he's still convinced that Stephanie is his personal security blanket and jungle gym all rolled into one.

*At Wild West Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, we love sharing the unique personalities and behaviors of the animals in our care. Our goal is to educate the public and inspire appreciation for wildlife. However, we do not advocate for keeping wild animals as pets. It is illegal. Jean-clawed situation is different since he is blind and cannot be released back in the wild.

🔥 Another Hot Day Ahead! 🔥

Tomorrow's forecast is calling for temperatures around 104°F, and while we feel the heat, our local wildlife does too.

One simple way you can help is by placing shallow dishes of cool water in shaded areas for wildlife to access. This is especially helpful for birds, including many young fledglings that are learning to fend for themselves this time of year.

We tend to see fledgling Blue Jays struggle the most during extreme heat, so if you have Blue Jays in your area, keep an eye out for signs of distress and make sure fresh water is available.

If you have any concerns about wildlife or come across an animal that may need assistance, we're here to help!

📞 Call or text us at 806-680-2483
🕙 We are open tomorrow (June 21st) from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

Stay cool, stay hydrated, and thank you for helping our wild neighbors through this Texas heat!

Today was the last day of rotation for fourth-year veterinary students Veronica and Jay from Texas Tech University School of Veterinary Medicine, and they are going to be greatly missed!

It has been such a pleasure having them with us these past 4 weeks. Their hard work, compassion, and dedication to wildlife have made a lasting impact on both our team and the animals in our care.

When asked what their favorite part of the rotation was, they both gave the same answer: working with our team. They shared how kind, helpful, and supportive everyone has been, always willing to jump in and help at a moment's notice. That means the world to us!

Veronica's favorite patient was Curly, affectionately named after one of the Three Stooges. Curly is a young raccoon who underwent an FHO (Femoral Head Ostectomy) and is recovering well. Veronica felt the name was fitting because of his goofy, derpy personality that always made her smile.
Jay's favorite case was a tiny raccoon he named Patricia. When she arrived, she was on the brink of death, but after being started on fluids and an antibiotic regimen to treat Campylobacter, she has made an incredible recovery.
Of course, no rotation would be complete without a memorable final day! Jay was officially welcomed into the wildlife rehabilitation world when he got sprayed by a skunk today. We can now confidently say he's part of the team!

As they move on to their next rotation starting Monday, we wish them both the very best. We have no doubt they will go on to do amazing things in veterinary medicine, and we are grateful they chose to spend part of their journey with us.

Thank you, Veronica and Jay—you will always have a place in the WWWRC family! ❤️

A few patient updates:

We’re happy to report that our adult bobcat is standing today!

Yesterday, her hemoglobin levels were critically low due to severe flea anemia, and she was unable to use her back legs. Hemoglobin is the part of red blood cells responsible for carrying oxygen throughout the body. When hemoglobin levels drop too low, the body's tissues and muscles don't receive enough oxygen, causing extreme weakness, lethargy, and in severe cases, an inability to stand or walk.

Today, we’re seeing encouraging signs. She’s standing, growling at us (which we’re taking as a good sign!), and she has kept her IV fluids in place. We’re now hoping she will begin eating on her own as she continues to recover.

🦝 We also have good news on our little raccoon patient. After receiving fluids, he was much more active today and was even trying to play. Seeing these small victories reminds us why we do what we do.

Please continue to keep both of these patients in your thoughts as they still have a long road ahead, but today gave us a little more hope.
