Sometimes, helping looks like:

๐Ÿš— Offering a ride
๐Ÿ“ฑ Sending someone a reminder
๐Ÿ”Ž Helping find a screening location

More than you might think. A study from the American Cancer Society found that women who reported participating in civic activities were also more likely to report receiving routine breast cancer screening.

Civic activities included:

โ€ข Volunteering
โ€ข Voting
โ€ข Attending community or public meetings
โ€ข Participating in groups that work to improve their communities

Researchers believe that community connections may create more opportunities to hear about health information, receive reminders, and find support for navigating barriers to care.

โ€œHave you scheduled your mammogram yet?โ€ That question may seem small, but encouragement from friends, family, coworkers, and community members can help someone take the next step.

You can help by:

๐Ÿ’— Sharing reliable breast health information
๐Ÿ’— Encouraging someone you care about to schedule screening
๐Ÿ’— Helping a friend find transportation
๐Ÿ’— Connecting someone with community resources such as PBH

You don't have to be a health expert. You can simply be someone who reminds another woman that her health matters.

A recent American Cancer Society study found that women who participated in civic activities such as volunteering, voting, attending community meetings, or working with community groups were more likely to report receiving routine mammograms.

Why might community connection matter? Being involved in your community can create more opportunities to hear about health resources, receive encouragement, and connect with people who can help navigate barriers to care. Health doesn't happen in isolation. Communities can help connect people to care.

๐Ÿ’— Share this post with someone who might need a reminder to schedule her mammogram.

PBH works to reduce financial barriers to breast cancer screening for women across the Texas Panhandle. Women can still face financial barriers when an abnormal mammogram requires diagnostic follow-up. For an uninsured woman, the barrier may be the entire cost of the test.

For an insured woman, the barrier may be a deductible, coinsurance or other out-of-pocket expense. Either way, a recommended follow-up shouldn't be ignored because of cost.

If your mammogram recommends additional testing, follow up. An abnormal mammogram can have many explanations, and most abnormal mammograms do not result in a cancer diagnosis. But the only way to know what an abnormal finding means is to complete the recommended follow-up.
