Improvingbirth.org - Amarillo,TX We are mothers and the people who care for us. Our mission is to bring evidence-based care and humanity to childbirth. www.improvingbirth.org medicated birth.

There’s a big problem with American maternity care when one in three babies is born by surgery, 9 out of 10 women do not receive care based on best medical evidence, and a woman’s chance of dying in childbirth is higher here than in 48 other developed countries. ~

This movement isn’t about natural birth vs. It’s not about hospital birth vs. homebirth or birth center birth. It’s about women being

capable of making safer, more informed decisions about their care and that of their babies, when they are given full and accurate information about their care options, including the potential harms, benefits, and alternatives. It’s about respect for women and their decisions in childbirth, including how, where, and with whom they give birth; and the right to be treated with dignity and compassion. Who We Are:
Our mission is to bring evidence-based care and humanity to childbirth--starting with the consumer. Evidence-based care is based on the highest quality, most current medical evidence, tailored to the individual. We believe that women can make safer, more informed decisions about their care and that of their babies when they are given full and accurate information about their care options, including the potential harms, benefits, and alternatives. Humanity in childbirth means respect of the birthing woman, of her autonomy, and of her fundamental right to make decisions about her body and her baby. We believe that childbearing women, like all human beings, should be treated with dignity, respect, and compassion. More about Who We Are: http://www.improvingbirth.org/who-we-are/

What We Do:
Right now, we're raising awareness about the crisis in American maternity care by going straight to the consumer to educate, inform, and provide opportunities for advocacy. Nearly 10,000 women, families, and birth professionals in over 100 cities in 46 states came out for our 2012 Labor Day rallies, raising awareness about the need for better, more respectful, evidence-based maternity care. In 2013, we expect to double those numbers, and we will go global with our cause. We also hand-delivered information about evidence-based care to over 2,000 doctors, nurses, and midwives in November 2012. We are working on educational programs for high-school and college-age young women and providers-to-be, a legal advocacy program for mothers, and a national platform to establish the fundamental human right of women to choose how and where they give birth. “I couldn't let this Labor Day go by without acknowledging the 6 years we spent raising awareness about the state of maternity care in cities all across this country.

We decided not to do the rally this year for many reasons, but certainly not because we are done doing this important work. Rather because it's time to change the focus.

Raising awareness is a necessity, but with limited resources, we have to focus on things that will move the needle.

This image is one of my favorites from years past, because it gives me hope. Patient-centered evidence-based care is happening in little pockets around the country, but it needs to grow like a wildfire. It needs to engulf the profit-driven fear-based doctor-knows-best mentality, and burn it to the ground.

ImprovingBirth will continue to fan those flames and do our part to make birth safer for all.”

On our page today, we were asked if our organization supports those who choose a c-section. Let us clarify: YES.
We feel the decision of what type of birth, where the birth occurs, and with whom the birth occurs should all be informed decisions of the birthing person and decisions they arrive at without being coerced or pressured.

"Our goal is not to advocate for a certain kind of birth, birth location, or provider, but to support women, families, and their decisions including how, where, and with whom they give birth. It's about ensuring that all people have access to the best birth for them. This includes options, information, and most of all—respect."

This. THIS right here. All the feels ❤️❤️❤️

This is you, and I know what you see. You see a soft middle, a round belly. You see too wide hips and your favourite jeans that don't do up. You see messy hair and tired eyes.
This is you, and here's what I see. A woman who held the universe in her womb, told by society she should be ashamed of it. I see strength and power to hold that growing and changing body and I see a new woman has recently emerged, a Mother. I see a woman who will not bounce back or go back to what she once was. She is so different now in so many much more beautiful ways.
This is you, and I know what your baby sees. Your baby sees perfection, ecstasy, joy, life, peace, love. Your baby sees home. Your baby sees you.

Bioethics abolished the prevailing Hippocratic tenet instructing physicians to make treatment decisions, replacing it with autonomy through informed consent. Informed consent allows the patient to choose treatment after options are explained by the physician. The appearance of bioethics in 1970 coin...

In the United States, the most recent yearly cesarean rate is 32.0 percent. It is clear that while almost one in three people give birth by cesarean, our high maternal and infant morbidity and mortality demonstrates that current obstetrical practices do not provide for better outcomes.
