Using recycled denim and old ties, these 4-H participants created a tote bag/purseโ€”learning firsthand how creativity and sustainability go hand in hand. These hands-on projects donโ€™t just build sewing skills, they also teach youth how to think differently about everyday items and reduce waste.
Proud of these young innovators for turning something old into something new! ๐Ÿ’šโ™ป๏ธ

Hello Potter County! ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿ’š

Iโ€™m excited and truly honored to introduce myself as the Prairie View A&M Cooperative Extension 4-H Youth Development Extension Agent serving our community. If you donโ€™t know me yet โ€” Iโ€™m Mica Malacara. I grew up in Amarillo and am proud to be a lifelong Potter County resident, so serving the community that helped mold me is especially meaningful.

My passion for 4-H began in my own youth. As a 4-H member, I discovered my love for sewing โ€” something that gave me confidence, creativity, and life skills I still use today. Iโ€™ll never forget the pride I felt wearing the first orchestra dress I made as an 8th grader at Bowie Jr. High, and later designing and sewing my own high school prom dresses. Those experiences taught me how powerful hands-on learning can be, and they helped shape who I am today.

Coming full circle and now helping create these same opportunities for youth is incredibly meaningful to me. I believe 4-H helps young people build leadership, independence, and skills that last far beyond the classroom.

Outside of my Extension role, I am also pursuing my Doctorate in Educational Leadership at West Texas A&M University. Iโ€™m especially excited to work alongside the dedicated Potter County Extension staff as we collaborate to serve youth, families, and communities across our county.

My hope is to expand access to 4-H programs, strengthen community partnerships, and create welcoming spaces where every young person feels supported, capable, and inspired to grow.

Thank you for the warm welcome โ€” I look forward to meeting many of you soon and working together to see our youth thrive! ๐Ÿ€
