NOTES FROM THE DIRECTOR of The SUNSHINE BOYS By Neil Simon
Welcome to The Sunshine Boys! It has been an enormous pleasure to be part of this production, and to have the opportunity to work with this amazing cast!
In prep for this show, a director analyzes the script. We look at the writer's words as clues, if you will, to provide valuable insight to the characters.
Our two main characters, Al and Willie as âLewis and Clarkâ were top-billed vaudevillians for over forty years. Forty. Years. And as the character âBenâ says, âYou donât work with a person for forty-three years without some bond of affection remaining.â
But as you will see in this play, now Al and Willie arenât speaking, and havenât spoken to each other for quite some time.
To gather more insight, let's explore human behavior for a sec, and explore
why people - do, respond, act - as they do.
Relationships are complicated. And expressing feelings, especially for these two characters, is even more complicated.
Underneath the bickering, and arguing, the reality is that Al and Willie love each other. Though it may appear dysfunctional, they complete each other in a way that cannot be fulfilled by anyone else.
Willie expresses his feelings about Al through words of affirmation, calling him, âterrificâ, â⌠he was the best, the BEST.â âYouâre a funny guy, AlâŚ.â
When Al learns that his lifelong friend has become ill, he sends flowers and candy, calls every day to check up on him, and he, too, becomes physically
affected by his friendâs illness.
But - their split was as painful as a divorce, as Willie says, âIâm a single now.â
The pain from such a traumatic event causes people to retract and build emotional walls as a way of self-protection. This show begins after a decade of building those emotional barriers.
So⌠What happens when you are left alone, and there is no one to complete your sentences or answer your questions? What happens when you are no longer able to â or given permission to do what you do, and be as you are?
Some accept and relish the memories. Some continue to fight for what they love.
Find out how Willie and Al face this life challenge.
Enjoy the show! ~~ Deb Kennedy
