City of Alvin Proclaims August 8, 2026 "Alvin Lions Club Day" as Club Celebrates 90th Anniversary

Longest-serving civic organization in Alvin marks nine decades of service with City Council proclamation, Lions Clubs International recognition, and celebration at Grace Hall

ALVIN, TX — August 5, 2026 — The Alvin Lions Club, the longest-serving civic organization in the City of Alvin, is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year, marking nine decades of service since its founding on August 8, 1936.

Several members of the club were present at the Alvin City Council meeting on July 16, 2026, to accept a proclamation from the City of Alvin designating August 8, 2026, as "Alvin Lions Club Day" in honor of the club's 90th anniversary. The club also recently received a plaque from Lions Clubs International recognizing the milestone.

The club marked the occasion with a celebration at Grace Hall, bringing together members, local officials, and community partners to honor the generations of Lions who have carried the club's mission forward since 1936.

"Ninety years of service is a testament to what a community can accomplish when neighbors commit to helping one another. We're proud to carry that legacy forward," said Jose Torres, President of the Alvin Lions Club.

Since 1936, the Alvin Lions Club has supported countless local initiatives, including vision and health screenings, youth programs, scholarships, and community fundraisers — continuing the Lions Clubs International mission of service above self.

As part of the anniversary recognition, two club members, Jim Hawkins and Carl Gerges, were honored with the Melvin Jones Fellowship, the highest individual honor bestowed by Lions Clubs International. Named for the organization's founder, the award recognizes exemplary humanitarian service to one's club and community.

The Alvin Lions Club continues to welcome new members interested in giving back to the Alvin, Manvel, Iowa Colony and nearby communities. For more information about upcoming events or membership opportunities, contact:

Several members of our club were present at the Alvin City Council meeting on July 16 to accept a proclamation designating August 8, 2026 as Alvin Lions Club Day. The proclamation is in recognition of the 90th Anniversary of the club. Established August 8, 1936, the Alvin Lions Club is the longest serving civic organization in Alvin.

What a great meeting today! It's our favorite time of the club year when we get to meet our scholarship recipients and our extra special guest - the camper we sponsored to Texas Lions Camp! Kendall Dudley and Ella Flores' mom, Kari Flores (Ella is working at camp this summer) shared their plans for the fall. They are two of our four scholarship recipients. Bryant Nesrsta,one of our scholarship recipients from last year, was able to join us to share about his first year at Texas A& M. Unable to be present were two of our other scholarship recipients, Reagan Strban and Elliott Janise. Nova Allen and her mom, Tami, shared about Nova's experience at Lions Camp. Nova said she had a great time and ended by saying "I love you all!" We love her right back and are proud to be her sponsor!

Lion Tail Twister Jay Hawkins always comes up with fun and games at club meetings.
