We’re celebrating the successful Artemis II crewed launch to the moon with an “out of this world” virtual adoption!
Sponsor our beautiful pony Artemis! Artemis joined our herd in 2014. Extremely fearful of humans, it took years for our training staff to prove to her that humans can be gentle and kind. While she still prefers horses to humans, Artemis can now receive essential care and greets our staff with joyful nickers!
Our Artemis’s story is just like that of the Artemis II mission - overcoming years of adversity to finally reach the stars. You can “fly to the moon” with her by virtually adopting Artemis and contributing to her care today! Click here to join her in her journey! - https://habitatforhorses.org/virtual-adoption/artemis

Did you know that April is Prevention of Cruelty to Animals month?

At Habitat for Horses, we work closely with law enforcement to help in the fight against animal cruelty - often working alongside law enforcement to assist with equine investigations and seizures whenever we’re needed. Many are surprised to know that we only take in equines through law enforcement cruelty cases, which helps us stay available to the horses and donkeys that need us the most - those who have experienced extensive abuse and neglect. Sadly, there’s no shortage of these cases. Each year, we are met with more and more equines who need our help. That’s why we aren’t only dedicated to the rescue of these animals, but to the education of our community as well.

Today, you can help us in our mission by spreading awareness, donating to our rescue, adopting a horse (virtual adoptions are available too!), or signing up to volunteer. Let’s fight animal cruelty together!

If you see a horse or donkey (or any animal) in need, please report it to your local law enforcement. You are often the first step in the fight against animal cruelty.

Our adorable Leonard and Sheldon were adopted earlier this month! 🎉
Did you know donkeys create strong and lasting bonds? When Leonard and Sheldon came to our rescue together, we knew they would need to find their forever home together too. And their new family was happy to welcome both boys into their herd! They are already so well loved by their new family ❤️
Happy trails Sheldon and Leonard!

LIVE LOOK!
Ever wonder how we feed our herd of nearly 300 horses every day? Let us show you!
Herd feeding isn’t easy, so our staff takes special care to monitor our horses. We keep a close eye on equine weights and body conditions to ensure everyone stays happy and healthy! Our equine manager pays close attention to seasonal changes, pasture quality and equine dentition to help our horses and donkeys get all the nutrients they need.
In this video, you’ll see our dedicated staff prepping for morning feed! Our senior horses require the most customization - receiving Purina Senior grain, beetpulp, alfalfa, salt, and a fat supplement! Their feed also gets soaked, so our incredible barn staff drops their buckets by hand in their pasture to feed them!
Our younger horses get fed via our tractor and hopper! They get Purina Impact - but are separated into pastures based on how many pounds they need. You can see our ranch manager in this video adjusting the amount of grain the hopper will drop!
Want to help us feed our herd? It costs us about $26,000 per month in grain alone to keep all of our horses and donkeys healthy. Head on over to www.habitatforhorses.org/donate to help us buy feed!

Friday Favorites!
💕
This week’s favorite photos include:
1. Moana making sure the human knows how the food system works in this pasture. Because The Human has her phone out for photos and so certainly doesn’t seem to be in a hurry to feed.
2. Sunrise in pasture (65 degrees in December isn’t something we take for granted).
3. Granite and Auntie taking a kip after breakfast.
4. A foggier sunrise.
5. Andrea supervising the humans cleaning her water trough.
6. Toby’s herd watching Andrea watching the humans (are you confused yet? Same!)
💕
Happy weekend everybody!

Our favorite kind of Transformation Tuesday! Joe (affectionately called JoeJoe) came in a while ago (end of 2021!) as an underweight youngster with an infected eye. Check out the difference in him now!
💕
You might know him for his love of painting (see previous posts from a while back - linked in comments) but this guy says the sky is the limit for him! He is available for adoption and would like everyone to know that while he may be shy at first and needs time to get comfortable, he’s doing really well with his positive reinforcement training and he has a goofy side to him that he’d love to show you! Ask us if you’d be a match for this playful guy today.
