The words we use with struggling students matter more than we sometimes realize.

Survival talk keeps us stuck in the feeling. Safety talk acknowledges what’s hard while gently opening a door forward.

As educators and counselors, we can’t always take away what a child is carrying. But we can change the language around it — normalizing their experience, reducing shame, and reminding them that hard moments are survivable.

These small shifts can be the difference between a child who feels alone in their struggle and one who feels supported through it.
