The Alva Community Garden is looking for individuals/families who would like to "rent" a garden bed this growing season! There is no cost involved to rent a bed and some bedding plants are provided.

We do ask that anyone who maintains a bed agree to w**d and take care of their personal bed, as well as agree to water the garden as a whole one to two times per week in a rotation with community garden volunteers. No harmful pesticides are allowed.

If interested, please message us on Facebook or contact Susan Justice Holliday for more information.

Stay ahead of summer lawn and garden issues by checking out these August Gardening Tips! Also, our factsheets website at https://extension.okstate.edu/fact-sheets/ has a wealth of free information that is available to the public. 😊

• Tall fescue should be mowed at 3 inches during the hot summer and up to 3 ½ inches if it grows under heavier shade. (HLA 6420)

• Watch for high populations of caterpillars, aphids, spider mites, thrips, scales, and other insects on plant material in the garden and landscape and treat as needed. (EPP-7306)

• Brown patch of cool-season grasses can be a problem. (HLA-6420)

Brush up on summer composting practices and more in these August Gardening Tips!

• Water compost during extremely dry periods so that it remains active. Turn the pile to generate heat throughout for proper sterilization

• Discontinue deadheading roses by mid-August to help initiate winter hardiness.

• Towards the end of the month, divide and replant spring-blooming perennials like iris, peonies, and daylilies if needed.

Begin prepping for your fall vegetable garden! Check out these August Gardening Tips to help you get a strong start!

• August is a good month to start your fall vegetable garden. Bush beans, cucumbers, and summer squash can be replanted for another crop. Beets, broccoli, carrots, potatoes, lettuce, and other cool-season crops can also be planted at this time. (HLA-6009).

• Soak vegetable seeds overnight prior to planting. Once planted, cover them with compost to avoid soil crusting. Mulch to keep planting bed moist and provide shade during initial establishment. Monitor and control insect pests that prevent a good start of plants in your fall garden.

• Water all plants thoroughly unless rainfall has been adequate. It is better to water more in depth, less often and early in the morning.

You know the yummy sweet corn that was brought to the Alva Farmers Market by Shelby and Ross Produce? They are coming back to the market with a trailer full of melons Tuesday evening, July 29th 6-8 pm.

Add this to all the awesomeness we have every week, including today with baked goods, tomatoes, canteloupe, a variety of cucumbers, squash, art, crafts and so much more then we have the Alva Farmers Market on Flynn. Lots of fresh goodness to pick from.

Let our customers know everything that will be there.

We appreciate everyone that has supported the farmers market in 2025. We will continue growing and bringing more goodness for you. No set up fees for vendors, just come join us.
