The Victory Garden at Mardorf UMC

The Victory Garden at Mardorf UMC We are a Community Garden in Altoona, whose goal is to get healthy fruits and vegetable to people who need them in our Community.

In Blair County, and especially in Altoona, obesity, diabetes, lack of access to and knowledge about nutritious foods, and food insecurity are major challenges to a higher-than-average proportion of our community. It is our desire and our goal to use our God-given gifts (our land, our volunteers, and our community's support) to serve both God and our neighbors by growing and distributing these delicious fruits and vegetables to our brothers and sisters in need.

We have big hopes to be able to make changes and expand the garden this year. To do that, WE NEED YOUR HELP!
We need:
- Lumber (scrap or new), UNTREATED (for beds)
- pre-fab beds or composite boards that you need to get rid of
- skids/pallets to make a fence, in good condition, preferably marked with "HT"
- We can also take chicken wire and other types of fencing if you have it available.
- small sump pump or even a whirlpool bath pump to make watering go a lot faster.

We've got a number of tomatoes and beans/peas coming up, and we could really use some POLES or STURDY STICKS and some NATURAL STRING (cotton, jute, h**p).

A sad morning today. When we watered this morning we found that the wildlife had discovered the garden. Among the casualties are the entirety of the bush beans, most of the strawberries, and a lot of the squash and cucumbers. :(

Sorry for the delay, but on June 6 an awesome group of 3rd graders from Juniata Gap Elementary School came up to enjoy the sunshine and planted the whole garden. Way to go kids! We're excited that we're able to work together on this project to help benefit our community!
