INDIVIDUALS ON HOW TO IMPROVE ALL ASPECTS OF LUNG HEALTH But there is much more to do and we need your help.

“Individuals might accomplish a few things, but groups of people working together can do the really big things.” That’s the philosophy behind the Lung Disease Foundation of Central Pennsylvania. The Foundation was formed as a non-profit corporation in 2013 to focus on education and the high tech development of pulmonary services in Central PA. The Foundation is a major supporting element of the Lu

ng Disease Center, as well as a willing partner to other local organizations involved in improving the services for lung disease patients in the region. The Foundation provides educational resources such as printed material, a speaking series and presentations. In addition, Dr. George Zlupko, Chairman of the Foundation Board, writes a weekly column, “Ask The Specialist”, which is published in the Altoona Mirror featuring up-to-date news and advice on lung health. Events such as the “Beacon of Light on Lung Cancer Light Up Night” and the “Beacon of Light on Lung Cancer Walk” are held annually to assist with fund raising efforts and increase community awareness regarding the seriousness of lung cancer. These fund raising efforts and contributions enable the Foundation to continue much needed education and support through the Lung Cancer Early Detection Program. This program has helped individual patients survive lung cancer and holds great promise for the future. In addition, the Foundation assists patients of the Lung Disease Center of Central Pennsylvania with their medical treatments and travel expenses. We invite individuals, businesses and organizations to join us in doing big things! Please call the Foundation to learn how, 814-946-2845.

SMOKING AND PD

I would like to address a decades old observation
about smoking and Parkinson’s Disease (PD). Some of
you may be aware that there is an observation about
the relationship of PD and smoking that seems to
contradict the notion that smoking is not a habit we
want to promote for any reason but the internet and
social media being what it is you may come across the
observation that links smoking with a lower risk of PD.
A nationwide review of 410,000 adults showed
that current smokers had the lowest incidence of PD.
Those who quit -whether recently or long ago- had
a roughly 60% higher risk. The severe health risks
of smoking cannot be overlooked. It remains the
leading cause of preventable death and contributes
to severe lung disease as well as heart disease.
The link between smoking and lower PD risk is an
association and should not be interpreted as evidence
that smoking prevents the disease. The study found the
association between smoking and PD risk was clearly off
set by the lower death risk associated with non-smokers
or in those that had discontinued the smoking habit.
My take on this, and I will need to look into
it further, is not that smoking provides some type
of protection against PD but it may be the use of
ni****ne. Ni****ne has been touted to help with
improved performance and cognition. It has been
used along with other supplements in patients with
traumatic brain injury and stroke. Don’t start smoking !!

BIOLOGICS

Biologics have become an important way in which
asthma specialists are able to control symptoms
and flair ups in their patients. However, there is no
treatment or therapy that does not have a potential
side effect or risk in any disease. One thing that
has concerned physicians is whether using the
asthma biologics could increase the risk of infection.
The biologics used in patients with asthma are designed
to control inflammation in a number of ways specific to
the medication. Inflammation is the first way in which our
bodies respond to infections and reducing that ability could
lead to an increase in lung infections such as pneumonia.
Using a large data base of information comparing
asthma patients, some of whom used biologics and
some that did not, researchers were able to identify any
increased risk of lung infection associated with the biologic
use. There are a number of biologics on the market for
asthma, and all were noted in the data. What was studied
specifically was the incidence of developing a respiratory
tract infection during a 3-year period of biologic use.
There was actually a trend toward a reduction
in pneumonia risk in biologic users. This helps to
confirm the safety of these important medications
and the benefit of a reduced risk of pneumonia.
If you are an asthma patient and are having difficulty
controlling your symptoms with usual therapy, talk to
your doctor about the use of a biologic. Our practice has
found them to be highly effective for asthma control.

CHILDHOOD OSA

Childhood obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has been
mentioned before in one or more of my articles. The sleep
specialists in our practice do not see children but I came across
some interesting information about the risks of children
developing influenza and Covid that I wanted to pass on.
The information comes from a large study
conducted on over 500,000 children through their
de-identified medical records. What was found in this
study was surprising. Children with obstructive sleep
are nearly twice as likely to develop influenza or Covid
compared with children that do not have sleep apnea.
OSA in children significantly increases the risk of
developing pneumonia from both influenza (2 times the
risk) and Covid-19 (26 times the risk). What does this mean
for parents with children having OSA or snoring? You
should prioritize vaccinations, promote good sleep habits
and tell your pediatrician if your child snores routinely.
One additional interesting finding in this study
was that the removal of the tonsils and related lymph
node tissue from the back of the throat, so-called
adenotonsillectomy did not reduce any of this risk.
As I mentioned, our office does not care for children,
but this information is important for any family, and
you probably would not have heard it anywhere else. If
you have concerns about the possibility of sleep apnea
in your son or daughter, talk to your pediatrician or
family doctor. Influenza and Covid-19 infections may
be seriously harmful in the young. Just so you know.
