Heather Sievers for Iowa

Heather Sievers for Iowa Iowa-born and raised, Nurse, Healthcare Leader, Wife, Mother of a child with rare disabilities, community advocate, Founder of Advocates for Iowa’s Children.

Iowa House Candidate D40. Ready for the next battle. Paid for by Heather Sievers for Iowa Hello. My name is Heather Sievers, running for Iowa House District 40, representing Altoona and the eastern side of Des Moines. I have learned so much from listening to people and advocating for them across the state, and I want to do more. I have seen how the current political landscape has hurt Iowans and c

ontinues to create a divide in our people. It’s time for this to change. My goals are to ensure that the voice of the community is heard, to reduce this political divide in our people, and focus instead on protecting rights and improving quality of life for all who live here. I will always choose our people over politics. This has inspired me to run for the Iowa House of Representatives seat for District 40 elections 2024. I promise to fight for better funding for our public schools, preservation our Area Education Agencies that serve all children and educators across the state, increase our minimum wage and find solutions to Iowa’s critical workforce shortage, focus on tax reform and reducing property taxes, support advancements in our healthcare system and rebuild our nursing workforce, advocate for our elderly and nursing homes, promote legislation that improves quality of life for people with disabilities, and protect all people against discrimination and working to preserve rights of all people across this state. Your voice matters to me. I want to hear from all of you and what you would like to see improve in the future. You can reach out to me anytime at [email protected]

A little bit more about me:

I am Iowa-born in Dubuque and raised in rural Panora, Iowa. I am honored to call this state home. I graduated from Adel-Desoto-Minburn high school at the age of 16 and have attended Iowa State University, Cornell College and University of Iowa, finishing my education with a dual masters in counseling psychology and clinical nurse leadership. I started my nursing career at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa working as a Nurse Preceptor and Charge Nurse before moving to Minnesota to be with my husband, Britt, to start a family in 2014. My husband is also Iowa-born and raised, a proud union member and an industrial mechanic. I spent the last 12 years working as a healthcare leader focusing on quality patient care, transformation and innovation, and am excited to start serving UnityPoint Health in Des Moines as their performance improvement manager starting in April 2024. As a mother of a child with rare disabilities, I am invested in ensuring equity and quality of services for all vulnerable or underserved populations and am the founder of Advocates for Iowa’s Children, a non-partisan group supporting advocacy for thousands of parents, children, educators and service providers across the state. Personally, I know how hard it can be to navigate complex systems, especially if you have a child or family member with unique needs. I wanted to create a group where we can learn from each other, to hear what the community needs and subsequently work together to advocate for what is best for our people. When we had our daughter in 2017, we knew she was going to need a lot of support, and it took years before we could get her diagnosis of Smith-Magenis Syndrome. There was about 18 months where my husband and I had to make the hard decision for me to quit my job to care for her. To stay together as a family while my husband was forced to pick up travel Millwright work to make ends meet, we sold our home and most of our belongings and moved into a camper so we could travel together as a family and figure this out. Family means everything to me. In 2019, we moved back to Iowa to settle down closer to our family. We knew that this would be the place to make sure she has the best life we could give her. I am proud to be an Iowan and proud to call this state home, but I know there is a lot of work to be done. Your donations to my campaign are critical to my ability to be elected into office and are sincerely appreciated. Thank you so much for all the birthday wishes! I’m the big 4–1 today!

It’s hard to have fun on your birthday when everything is kind of going to crap though. I just really want things to get better.

You know what I want for my birthday, give me five bucks to help me flip the Iowa House seat so I can do the work I need to do to help our community. https://secure.actblue.com/donate/heather-sievers-for-iowa-1

Taking my baby into Sylvan Learning in for summer school and tutoring. They are such an amazing organization and my daughter absolutely loves it. ❤️ With her Disabilities, she is testing behind her grade level, and I know that they’re gonna really help get her ready for fourth grade. The educators are amazing and do such a good job building confidence and making sure it’s a fun engaging environment!

As a nurse myself, it is very clear that we are in a significant nursing shortage in Iowa, with our nurses being some of the lowest paid in the nation, with one of the hardest jobs taking care of every single one of us. They deserve fair wages, and safe work environments.

Not very many people know this, but I worked at UnityPoint Health as a leader in healthcare for a few years. I am a nurse, union family and union supporter. When UnityPoint leadership told me that I had to be silenced and could no longer support unions, not just nursing unions but any unions at all, I submitted my resignation the next day.

I believe in the election process… if nurses want to unionize, that is their right by Law. We all have to stand up and make sure democracy still exists and that people’s votes matter. The UnityPoint Des Moines nurses voted to unionize. They shouldn’t have to fight this long to have their votes recognized.

We all need to be paying attention to the impacts of the Medicaid cuts. This is real, and it will impact everyone, not just people with disabilities like my daughter. Our state bank is already underfunded, which is why health insurance companies across our state are going to be increasing your insurance premium costs again to try and make up the deficit because of a bill passed by Republicans in the last session. It's time for

Despite her own disability, Bonnie Beaman worked to help her challenged daughter have a better life. Then came Medicaid cuts.

I’m so grateful to be on the ballot for Iowa House District 40 representing , east , and southside !!

Here is the honest part: this race is critical and it’s going to be tough….I’m ready for it, especially knowing this community is beside me.

Republicans know HD-40 is one of the most flippable House seats in Iowa. They know we came within just 318 votes of winning in 2024 in a red wave election year. And they know we are building a stronger campaign this time around.

They are not going to give up this seat easily.

And very importantly, My race is bigger than one House seat.

If (i.e., when) Rob Sand is elected governor, flipping seats like HD-40 could help protect his ability to stop bad bills before they become law.

That matters because Iowans deserve leaders who are focused on real problems, not political games.

How well we perform in my House Race can help Democrats up and down the ballot including Rob Sand for governor, Sarah Trone Garriott in IA-3, Josh Turek for U.S. Senate, and statewide candidates across Iowa.

After the momentum we have built from strong fundraising, to great events, to the energy we are seeing at the doors. Rep. Gustoff is going to get help. Outside groups will pay attention. Republicans will spend money here.

That means we have to be ready now.

So far, we have outraised Rep. Gustoff by $19,492.06, and we have more than $19,000 more cash on hand than he does. That is strong progress, and I am proud of it and grateful for you all! But in a race this close, we cannot take anything for granted.

The reality is my opponent doesn’t have to work as hard because he will have hundreds of thousands of dollars funded into his race towards the end of his campaign from big corrupt corporate PACs and will continue to push out lie smear political commercials, etc. Same old same old.

Every dollar helps me knock more doors, reach more voters, send more mail, put up more signs, and make sure people across HD-40 know what is at stake.

I know money is tight. Trust me I’m in the same boat. But if you are able to donate even small amounts like five dollars, $10 or $25 today, it will help kickstart this race and make sure that I can compete against corrupt politics. I want to do this grassroots and I couldn’t do it without you.

DONATE TODAY TO HELP ME FLIP HD-40: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/heather-sievers-for-iowa-1 or you can reach out to me if you’d prefer to have an alternative way to donate.

At the doors, I am hearing from people who are worried about rising costs, public schools, retirement security, health care, reproductive freedom, and whether their elected officials are actually listening to them. Please help me get elected, so I can work on what this community is asking for. I appreciate every single one of you. I won’t let you down. 💪❤️

If you wanna be part of this campaign, there’s plenty of little things that people can do to support, like helping with postcards or handing out yard signs or coming out with me to the doors. ❤️ sign up here and you can also request a yard sign if you’d like one!: https://www.heathersievers4iowa.com/sign-up-for-a-yard-sign
