Ezekiel Shade
Ezekiel "Zeke" Shade, a 12-year-old from Altoona, PA, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in October of 2025. Earlier at the end of summer, he began having increased fatigue, shortness of breath with exertion, and grew very pale. His symptoms culminated during an exhausting hike up to the lookout at Indian Peaks Trail on Sproul Mountain and persisted through to the next day while camping overnight with his Trail Life troop. His parents, Katie and Jason Shade, became more concerned as his symptoms did not improve throughout the following week.
Upon arriving at the pediatrician's office, a finger prick screen for hemoglobin was performed, and the results were significantly low. They were referred to UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, where later that night he was diagnosed with leukemia, with a hemoglobin level of 3.4 (normal range 11-16) and a white blood cell count of 98,000 (normal range 4,800-10,800). While he was in the pediatric ICU (PICU), his leukemia was determined to be acute myeloid leukemia (AML), a rare and aggressive blood cancer that impacts the bone marrow's ability to produce appropriate cells to make blood. He immediately started the induction one protocol as indicated by the Children's Oncology Group, and during this initial phase of treatment, the bone marrow biopsy and aspirate revealed that Zeke has a type of AML that is twice as hard to get into remission and twice as hard to keep in remission, and requires a bone marrow transplant immediately upon achieving remission. Zeke went through three rounds, or inductions, of chemotherapy to achieve remission, requiring approximately five weeks of inpatient hospital stay for each round. He was able to be home with his parents and two sisters for two months while waiting for a bone marrow donor to be matched. He was admitted to the bone marrow transplant wing on April 4 and received his transplant on April 21, incidentally on AML World Awareness Day. He suffered a complication of severe to very severe veno-occlusive disorder and thrombotic microangiopathy, where the inner lining of the small blood vessels becomes damaged and leaks fluid out of veins into the body. This required a nine-day stay in the PICU just after Mother's Day, but he was able to return to the oncology bone marrow transplant wing where he is continuing his recovery.
Isaac Weakland
Isaac Weakland is a 4-year-old boy, born on 9/20/2021, and is the son of Ashley and Joey Weakland. He has two brothers, Aidan (7) and Elijah (3). The family resides in La Jose. At the end of January, both of Isaac's brothers were diagnosed with strep throat. A week later, Isaac became sick with fevers and leg pain. Isaac's pediatrician diagnosed him with a virus. Isaac grew increasingly sick. He had several emergency room visits and was seen by an infectious disease team. Isaac continued to suffer with around-the-clock fevers, growing weaker, losing his ability to walk, and eventually losing 10 lbs. On a Saturday in March, Isaac's pale color and increased lethargy were the symptoms that caused him to return for another emergency room visit at the children's hospital. Doctors hesitated, but after his mother's persistent requests, Isaac was tested and diagnosed with B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. B-Cell ALL is a fast-growing, aggressive cancer where the bone marrow produces too many abnormal white blood cells. Organs such as the liver and spleen may swell to abnormal levels. Isaac was hospitalized for two weeks and underwent several bone marrow aspirations, lumbar punctures, and a port placement. Isaac required blood transfusions and presented with reactions every step of the way, leading the team to shift his treatment. Isaac continues to receive oral chemotherapy daily, weekly chemotherapy, and is hospitalized every three weeks for intensive treatment. As a result of chemotherapy, Isaac is highly susceptible to infections and often requires blood transfusions. Isaac is a brave little boy, a courageous warrior who longs to become a police officer one day.
