You may have observed that your fire department has a significant number of new personnel. On July 1, the city council approved the addition of three new positions, one per shift, to expand the department in response to the growing demand for our services. We extend our gratitude to the city council for this decision.

You may notice more than 3 new members on the department. Since January, 9 members have departed, and we have subsequently hired 9 new members to replace them.

We would like to acknowledge and express our appreciation to those 9 members for their years of dedicated service to the Altoona Fire Department and the citizens of Altoona.

* Lieutenant Smith, 8 years
* Firefighter/Paramedic Retzlaff, 8 years
* Firefighter/Paramedic Dishinger, 6 years
* Firefighter/Paramedic Simoni, 5 years
* Firefighter/Paramedic Monley, 4.5 years
* Firefighter/Paramedic Sieve, 4 years
* Firefighter/Paramedic Curran, 2.5 years
* Firefighter/Paramedic Duckett, 2.5 years
* Firefighter/EMT Badker, 2 years (Paramedic certification anticipated this fall)

The cumulative total of 42.5 years of experience lost to Bondurant Emergency Services, Johnston-Grimes Metropolitan Fire District, Waukee Fire Department, and Des Moines Fire Department is significant.

This loss not only affects experience but also results in a reduction of Advanced Life Support Providers. Achieving Paramedic certification typically requires 8-14 months.

Please be assured that we remain capable of providing Advanced Life Support. However, our resources may be stretched thinner, and we may require assistance from neighboring cities.

We remain committed to delivering the exceptional service our citizens expect and deserve.

We extend our best wishes to these nine members as they embark on new opportunities with their respective departments and wish them continued safety.

With heavy hearts we are passing our sincere condolences to the members of Burlington Local 301 and Kyโ€™s family.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Firefighter and Local 301 President Ky Duttlinger. Ky has been a Burlington Firefighter for over 25 years, giving countless hours towards his roles as firefighter, paramedic, engine driver, instructor, and Local 301 President. There is no doubt he has positively influenced thousands of lives both locally and across the State of Iowa.

Ky loved his fellow firefighters dearly and would truly do anything for someone in need. He embodied the spirit of a professional firefighter in ways that younger generations will aspire towards. He will be dearly missed both on and off duty.

Please keep Ky and his firefighter family in your thoughts. We will announce memorial service information once details have been finalized.

The Altoona Professional Firefighters are proud to announce our support for MacKenzie Bills, candidate for Iowa House District 40. The President and Secretary of Local 4743 had the opportunity to meet with MacKenzie and discuss the common issues for the fire service. We believe, without a doubt, that MacKenzie Bills truly cares for firefighters.

In the past month, Altoona Firefighters have been hard at work. When not responding to emergencies they have been training in firefighting, emergency medicine, and technical rescue. This includes sharpening their ability to perform ladder pick off maneuvers.

A ladder pick off is performed to lower a victim from an elevated position that cannot be safely decended from with an unresponsive or incapacitated victim, such as construction sites or industrial roofs.

A ladder pick off is executed by sending EMS personnel to the victim while the truck company prepares the ropes and truck's ladder for the maneuver. Once the victim is secured in a stokes basket and the truck's ladder is in position, the basket is secured to the ropes (rated for 9000lbs) and lowered to the ground where EMS care is continued and the victim is transported to the emergency room.

Altoona's Local 4743 Firefighters take great pride in having the opportunity to serve the citizens of our community 24/7 and are always grateful for your support!
