Artist Spotlight- Little Jimmy Melonballer

Little Jimmy Melonballer wandered away from Saxton in 1965 and visited the big city, briefly, before going to the desert to wander for a few years.

When Jimmy came back to Pennsylvania, he remembered why he left, and went to New England for 30 years and 30 nights. There he learned how to tune a mandolin, then a banjo, then a guitar, and finally a baritone ukulele.

Jimmy has been writing songs since 1991 and had a song featured on the Doctor Demento show. He returned, begrudgingly, to Saxton in 2017 to stack wood for the winters so he could keep warm, while writing songs describing his adventures away from the shire.

This year, Jimmy performed at Mass N Tha Grass Music and Arts Festival, Route 22 Rock & Blues Festival, Music in the Meadow, Fall Festival of the Arts and The Sinking Valley Farm Show.

Artist Spotlight-Mary Madigan

Mary Madigan grew up in Altoona with guitar in hand. Her first gig was a talent show when she was in 6th grade. There was always music about in her home and Mary was always singing with her father and siblings.

Mary is no newbie to Guthrie! Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, Bonnie Raite, all shaped her vocal & finger picking style. Her years of music has included music therapy for her patients, bringing joy to nursing homes and she currently provides music therapy for the cancer center at Mount Nittany Hospital.

Mary has sung with the choral society in State College and is a member of the Unitarian Fellowship Choir in State College. Mary was also a member of the Allied Military Choir while living in Berlin Germany, and had the honor of singing with combined choirs from Germany, France, England and the United States for civilian & military events in Berlin. Now her time is spent writing songs and being part of a very active singer songwriter community in State College.

She is also a member of the Acoustic Brew in State College and can be found playing bluegrass with players at Pine Grove Hall Lutheran Church basement players! “There is never a day without music in my life.” Mary is now in the process of recording her original music and hopes to share a music release next year.
