Founded in 2020 by the State College NAACP and hosted in partnership with the State College Borough, the Center for the Performing Arts at Penn State, and the Happy Valley Adventure Bureau, the annual Juneteenth Celebration honors freedom, history, and the ongoing pursuit of equity and opportunity. Inspired by the event's mission, the 2024 Juneteenth Planning Committee established the 1865 Freedom Legacy Scholarship to recognize the academic achievement, leadership, and community service of racially underrepresented and Indigenous students.

This year, scholarships were awarded to three outstanding students: Abraham Abdul-Hamid and Lila Franklin of the State College Area School District, and Ruth Gibboney of the Bellefonte Area School District, pictured here.

Through this scholarship, Juneteenth's legacy continues by investing in the next generation of leaders and changemakers. Support future scholars by donating to the 1865 Freedom Legacy Scholarship Fund. To honor this Juneteenth, we're featuring a print from the SAMA permanent collection. The dramatic “Legacy of John Brown” series by Jacob Lawrence tells the story of Brown’s violent insurrection against slavery in a series of 22 silk screen prints. We hope this piece speaks to you about the spirit of freedom and resilience.
