This Saturday we're planting one of our favorite suppressors: Wild Strawberry (Fragaria virginiana, https://plants.sc.egov.usda.gov/plant-profile/FRV ).

Suppression might sound aggressive, but Wild Strawberry works quietly. It spreads by sending out runners along the soil surface, forming a dense living mat around the base of fruit trees. Plant them about a foot apart and within a year you have ground coverage thick enough to crowd out invasive species without chemicals or constant "weeding".

Wild Strawberry is native to Pennsylvania and supports butterflies and moths, feeds caterpillars and provides nectar to native bees. The berries are small, but they're genuinely good.

It earns its place in the guild by doing essential, quiet work.
