Working towards Being a Champion... AS the year progresses, many skaters have to make the decision of wether they are doing this sport for Fun or to be a Champion on a World Class Level. Regardless if you are a new skater, young skater, or average skater, you have to put in your mind and in your plan where you want to go with this sport. Those who wish to compete on a World Class Level must get their training plans to a much higher level. If you are skating for Fitness, many times it is wise to notify your coaching staff so they can guide you in the correct direction,. If you are wanting to compete on a WOrld Class Level, its time to put the work in. These days, I see so many that are doing the "Talk" but not doing the "walk". From a coaches point of view, you must put in the work to get the results. So many times I have been to various practices and I am seeing coaches that are working very hard and doing great things for the sport but sometimes I see that they do not always have the right thoughts or components to put together a successful program for a skater wanting to compete at that level. There is so much more to training and being at a world class level than going fast and turning left. I have had the opportunity to work with some of the best skaters in the world from the old school skaters to the new including Jorge Botero, Bart Swings, Scott Arlidge, Kalon Dobbin, Joey Mantia, Yann Guyader, Cecilia Baena, Diego Rosero, and the list goes on and it is clear WHY these people are all world Caliber and Champion skaters. It has to do with the EXTRA work that is put in. Every day I read about Yann up at 5 am running, Cycling 60-70K, the Gym, etc etc, Even the older and mature skaters training for smaller levels still out at the track with Weight vests, bands, slideboard and much more. Coaches, if your skaters are striving to be at the World Class Level, then you must start by researching and putting together a program that will get them there. Being a World Champion is not a GIFT, it is a TALENT that is perfected and worked on every day of the week. Skaters, if you wish to compete with the big dogs, its time to toughen up and train like the big dogs. Get yourself on a program that can take you to that level. Work on Nutrition. You must be eating right to compliment the training you are doing. Funny, I looked over a training program from a while ago that was designed for Chad Hedrick, Derek Downing, and the other greats, and the work that was put in is so much greater that we have to question about how we are doing things and if as coaches we have forgotten about the basics of hard work and persistence. More than anything I would love to see the program in the USA get back to greatness. Working overseas with teams that are producing champions, It is clear how important these hardcore basics are to your skaters. This is my opinion and I give many kudos to those out there that are working at this and doing programs that are increasing our numbers as well as maturing and developing our skaters to be great again. Coaches, be sure to join the ISCA (www.speedcoachesassociation.com) and I hope that we can all help each other to become the best at what we do again.
